All I know is this:
If I address someone in my normal fashion, using the normal, logical pronouns I grew up with and they started to correct me with "My preferred pronouns are They/Them" then I'm going to laugh and walk away ending the conversation.
I can't, and won't deal with these idiots. I don't reside in La-La Land where they've obviously set up camp.

I'm a BIG fan of pronouns.
They're the perfect early warning to take my business elsewhere.

I must confess.
I was at Lowes and said to a uniformed person stooping down, "Excuse me sir..." when she stood up and turned around and I saw her boobs, I realized my mistake.
But generally speaking, if they can get away with it, more power to them. If they can't, I reserve the right to point and laugh.

Back when I was at Tulane I got an email saying I hadn't given them my pronouns
Got an email from my Drs. office about a year ago asking me to update my information and confirm my upcoming appointment.
I first confirmed the appointment and started filling out the form and about the 2nd page was asked to let them know what my preferred pronouns were.
That was it. I clicked delete and sent it to the trash bin. I don't buy into that stupidity and I never got another email from them.
The day of the visit I wasn't asked that stupid question again.

I'll start addressing individuals with plural pronouns as soon as they start addressing me by my chosen title: "shinerfan the hung, Lord of Golf and Duke of the Barley". "Quisach Haderach" is also acceptable in some settings.

If the second-person personal pronoun can be considered either singular or plural (you), why can't the third-person personal pronoun be considered singular or plural (they)?

The entire idea of these pronouns is completely INSANE.
People who freak out when a stranger doesn't address them by some "preferred pronoun" are TOTALLY INSANE.
They professional counseling.

To my knowledge, this is the stupidest comment in the history of the internet.

They or them is only correct if the person has a mouse in a pocket
I had a Brother who taught Religion class that used that line...

But once it becomes known it makes zero linguistic sense to use it, especially when it flies in the face of subject verb agreement.
So, it's okay for "you" to be singular or plural, but it's NOT okay for "they" to be singular or plural.
Why not?

Because language is a pretty important building block of civilization and allowing each person to make up their own rules and meanings means that there are no rules or meanings. (I tried to type slowly, were you able to follow that?)

The only time I interact with questionable pronoun people is when they are serving me coffee.

Languages change over time.
If the choice is between using xe/xem or ze/zim, or simply going with constructions for which there is already a precedent, such as "you/you" for second person pronouns, I'd rather go with simply recognizing third person pronouns just like we already do with second person pronouns rather than introducing made up words such as xe/xem or ze/zim.

But then I don't get so angry over it. I'm not sure why you're so invested, except for perhaps the possibility that it all strikes a bit too close to home for you, personally.

Context.

That's a non sequitur.
The context is second-person vs third-person, and singular vs plural pronouns. That we may use the same word for second-person singular or plural would seem to suggest it wouldn't be such a stretch to assign the same construction to the third-person that we do to the second.
It beats the hell out of coming up with new words such as xe/xem.

Smart people don't do this either. "He", "she", "it". All bases covered.

mandatory pronouns are annoying AF.
why the hell is it possible to get in trouble for calling a guy "He"
however I don't really give a shite if someone chooses to go by a pronoun, just the "gotcha" part is stupid.

And yet you seem to find that more acceptable than just using "they".
But then, I must be one of the smart people since this has never been an issue for me IRL. It's only existed as an internet discussion.
Except that in the vernacular, I use "they" to refer to almost anything. "Hey, they got any more beers in the cooler?" could even be referring back to myself.
