For all the first timers, stick it out through the slow start. Finds itself half way through the first season.
I bailed in real time but went back and watched right after it was all finished and it was completely worth it.
I’ll hopefully finish Shogun and Fallout before then.
Lot of good television this year and I feel like this show will get the Suits revival treatment.

Updated the OP, we're good to go now. I haven't checked Netflix but I'm assuming it's already dropped.
100%. Really starts hitting it's stride in season 2.
Finished Fallout last night and fell asleep in Shogun. Both are great shows. There really is some great TV out right now

Just chiming in. This series is easily in my top 3. It's there alongside GOT's first 4 seasons. Every single season finale is epic, especially S02E10(best episode of the series IMO followed closely by S03E10).
Captain Flynn is one of the most nuanced, well written characters in television. And by the end of the series, John Silver is right there with him.
Just stick through season 1 until the finale. This show then becomes an absolute hell on wheels in the golden age of sail. Enjoy!

Went and checked the Fringe thread like I said I would do, and this is an example of what the OP said/contained during the run of the thread:
quote:
On the menu this week:
Season 2:
Episode 19: "The Man From the Other Side" - The episode follows the attempts of Thomas Jerome Newton, with the help of shapeshifters, to create a pathway between the two parallel universes, while the Fringe team's Olivia Dunham, Peter Bishop, and Walter Bishop try to stop him.
EPsode 20: "Brown Betty" - As the episode begins with Peter's continued disappearance, Walter consoles himself by smoking a strain of marijuana called "Brown Betty." Most of the episode is then told from his drug-addled perspective, in which Olivia is a 1940s noir detective and Peter is a conman who ran away with Walter's glass heart.
Episode 21: "Northwest Passage" - The episode follows Peter (Joshua Jackson) as he continues to stay away from Boston after learning his true parallel universe origins; his travels takes him to a small town, where he helps the local police investigate mysterious disappearances.
Discussion on this batch of episodes due to start Monday, September 8th. Enjoy the show.
CURRENT DISCUSSION
Episode discussion begins on ~page 37 for the following episodes:
Episode 16: "Peter" - Considered a keystone episode of the series, "Peter" is a flashback episode, told as Walter Bishop (John Noble) reveals to Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) that his son Peter (Joshua Jackson) is really the Peter of the parallel universe. Walter explains the events that occurred in 1985 that led to this, and the impact it had on the parallel universe to be at war with the prime one.
Episode 17: "Olivia. In the lab. With the Revolver." - In the episode, Olivia (Anna Torv) investigates a man with a possible connection to her who has the lethal ability to spread cancer by touch.
Episode 18: "White Tulip" - It followed a scientist (Peter Weller) in his quest to time travel back and save his fiancée, while the Fringe team investigates the consequences of his actions, and Walter (John Noble) struggles to tell his son Peter (Joshua Jackson) he was stolen from the parallel universe as a boy.
Note to people who haven't seen the series:
Please feel free to join in at any time, but know that there will be spoilerish things discussed since this is a REWATCH. So while you may not get too many things spoiled on you for the most part, eventually the discussion will begin to tie in with future happenings on the show. So be prepared for that. However, I actually think this could be a really cool way to experience the series for the first time, so you're more than welcome to participate.

Stick it out. A good bit of people felt the same way. I always say give at least the first season a go. It seriously gets better with every season but if you don’t like it enough to continue after the first season then you probably won’t like it.

I said the same thing. If you can, give it the entire first season. I promise it picks up and becomes prettt awesome. Hell, join in with this thread if that would help. But it picks up really well and becomes one of the best shows ever.

Completed I. Second viewing.
Question: Why does Billy lie about the paper at the end of the episode? I’ve never quite understood his motive there.

I watched the first season or two then moved and changed my cable.
I remember someone getting crushed by a boat on the beach and that’s about it.

Watched first episode last night. "Special" effects (CGI or modeling) are pretty damn cheesy. And acting leaves quite a bit to be desired. GoT spoiled me for this type of epic.

This was my thought as well after watching the 1st episode.

1st episode Naysayers have started as expected.
Your opinions aren’t invalid. Again, I bailed after 2 or 3 episodes and only came back because of this board.

Episode 1 spoilers…
I think it was really a loyalty test to Billy. Flint had just come up with that plan prior to the sword fight after finding the feather and realizing it was someone on the crew that took the feather. Kind of a risk leaving it up to Billy to be loyal but maybe he knew he already had Billy in his pocket since Billy knew the Urca de Lima story now.
Also, you kind of factor in the Treasure Island aspect of it. The show isn’t a tellling of the book but it’s obviously got characters from it. But in the book Flint stuck terror in people just based off his name. Maybe Billy already had some fear there that influenced his decision.

So is the discussion starting already, or are we planning on starting E1-3 discussion next week? I thought it was three episodes were assigned for this week and be ready to discuss next week.

I don't know most of the characters names yet, but the prostitute that took the schedule from Silver is freaking smoking hot. Good gracious.
