100% he's too slow
He'll be a career backup big and play in the league, but the NBA doesn't really want bigs that can't shoot 3s anymore.

He’s nowhere near Wemby skillsket. A better comparison would be a better Tacko Fall
Yep.
He's a throwback NBA center in a style of play that really doesn't exist anymore. If you are an NBA center you have to be able to handle the ball a bit, score in more ways that simply with your back to the basket, and shoot 3's reasonably well, along with blocking shots. Purdue hasn't asked Edey to do much of that.
You can't "coach" 7'4". So he's worth a draft pick. Maybe even a late first round pick for a team with multiple first rounders and no glaring need on the roster. But the days of Ralph Sampson and Patrick Ewing, where Edey would be the clear #1 pick, are long gone.
There may be no other major sport where the difference in skill level is so vast than the NBA vs college basketball.

Zedey will be drafted before any LSU players for sure.

Ya’ll love to say shoot 3’s well and yes everyone in the NBA shoots better than years past, but there’s plenty of guys in the nba that don’t shoot well beyond the arc.
Edey may be a bench player or bust, idk. But he’s the most completely dominant center in college basketball in a long time.

Yeah its not that he would be a bad fit on the court, I'm just not sure leaning out and dropping body fat % would be great for his game, which the Heat would want him to do. Or I might be completely off base and that takes him to the next level as a player.... just seems like a waste when hes not getting gassed out there as is like you said

There is a spot for him and Klingan probably mid to late first round Wembayanna might actually change some of the perceptions on what you can do with bigs these days

Way better than this guy & most certainly play more than 37 NBA games
Fall was a sideshow.
Edey can actually play. He’s more like Walker Kessler or Ivan zubac. He’s going to go in the top 20

quote:This isn't necessarily true. Guys like Jarret Allen show you can be a prominant big without an outside game, you just need to be able to rim run and protect the rim. Edey's problem is he's not nearly the athlete that Allen or even Capella are. But still, you have players like nurkic, Zubac, Gobert, and Mitchell Robinson who are good, effective centers that have little to no outside game. Gobert and Mitch Rob have played a combined 17 seasons in the NBA and have taken a combined 17 threes, having zero makes They are, however, elite rim protectors.

I think one thing about his game that gets overlooked is his ability to reset in the paint and not get three second calls. That will be hugely beneficial in the NBA. He's got a spot in the league, but as others have said, he's likely a late first/early second guy.
I wouldn't mind him on the pelicans. If Walker Kessler can average 23 minutes a game, I don't see why Edey can't be a space filling, rim protecting big who sets hard screens and rolls for 15 minutes a night. Especially against teams that love attacking the paint/don't have a 5 who can stretch the floor reliably.

IDK if his feet are quick enough to guard NBA bigs on the perimeter. Right now at worse he is a practice squad player. At best he gets a few minuets a game. Until he gets better NBA bigs that shoot a high parentage from outside will dominate him.
He’ll be a career 5 ppg, 5 rebs type of guy at about 8-10 mins per game. You can’t play him for long stretches because he’ll just be cooked, he can’t move and guard anyone outside of the paint.
He also needs a lot more moves on the block, all he’s got is a baby hook. Needs a fadeaway amongst many other things

Ben simmons has 5 career 3s in the NBA.

Edey has decent form on his free throws but that is only time I have seen him shoot a ball beyond 5 feet from the rim...has he ever squared up to shoot a jumper in a game?
Posted on 4/9/24 at 12:42 pm to Chicken
Soft, slow, has the game of a middle school center. Layups and baby hooks, no game away from the basket. He has tall. Maybe he will develop, probably not.

Klingan has been impressive just with his intensity and bodying up on Edy.

While very few teams are going to expect their center to be a top 3 point shooter, they at least have to show they are capable to knock one down from deep here and there when left open. Guys like Jokic, Giannis, AD, Nurkic, etc aren't going to shoot a ton of 3's per game. Generally only 1-3 attempts. But they have to be capable to fully facilitate the offense.
Edey has taken two three point attempts in his ENTIRE Purdue career. Couple that with the fact that he's not all that quick enough to guard NBA PF's and (many) Centers on the perimeter, and he's not a particularly high value player because his skill-set is limited.
That's not to say he can't find a spot on an NBA roster. But the college game is MUCH different than the NBA game.

Unfortunately for his bank account, he was born 20 years too late.

I don’t recall a draft with such varying opinions. I’ve seen Clingan from 3rd overall to the second round. Cody Williams from 1st overall to 11th.

It appears he doesn't use his left hand either. Defender was sideways on him in the paint.
I had a kid do that to me once when he realized I couldn't go to my right with back to basket.
Edey was able to go right and do a head fake to get space but otherwise it seems he's gotta work on being able to go that way if he's not gonna move all game.

He honestly doesn't fit today's NBA.
Funny how he would be a Greg Oden draft pick years ago. He needs to distribute and expand his range...which is probably too late in the game to be a modern player. But he's tall...so he'll always have a roster spot.

He has pretty good stamina and played a ton of minutes in the tournament without having to sub out. I think his sub out yesterday was the first sub in 3 games?
The NBA game with the 24 second clock and bigs that run up and down and shoot like guards is a whole different animal. Edey would gave to seriously improve his skill set to amount to anything in the NBA. Maybe he can.
