What do the Big Dipper and fireflies have in common?

For those living in urban and suburban areas, sightings of either have likely become quite rare. The reason is light pollution, which happens when man-made light sources such as streetlamps and vehicle headlights fill the night sky.

“This is a serious problem for the entire environment," astronomy expert Sally Oey said.

Oey, a University of Michigan professor, spoke to the Washtenaw County Environmental Council in February 2024 about the dangers of light pollution and solutions the county can take to ameliorate this issue.

Light pollution is “light that is not being directed entirely to its intended purpose," Oey said.

This results in excess light spreading through the atmosphere, an effect that is increasing at an exponential rate of approximately 10% a year.

Stupidity at its best.

So, eventually our atmosphere will glow...

I'm a big proponent of dark skies lighting restrictions. Used to see the Milky Way clearly as a kid from my parent's house. Impossible, now

Yeah... I don't see the problem with this at all.

So now y’all support government shutting off street lamps and headlights? And you don’t see the negatives?

Dumb take. Just don't direct light up. Direct it down where most is absorbed and not reflect up into the atmosphere.

I like seeing the Milky Way and a sky full of stars. And I only have to drive about 20 minutes to still be able to do that.

But..

No. Not really.
It's just a matter of aesthetics and cities can change building codes as they wish to facilitate that.
Everything is a fricking existential threat now.

This is stupid. What have we learned about entities that are given influence/power? They want more! They have to manufacture crises to justify their existence!
Slippery slopes aren't just for sexual deviants...

Prime example of why college degrees cost $80-90K now.

Light pollution also affects other things like bird migration, plant life, nocturnal species, etc.

This is actually a great idea to slow down some of the side effects of urbanization.

Moronic people: "All this light is polluting our atmosphere!"

Me: "Oh for fricks sake..."

They, and apparently some idiots in this thread, would be very happy with North Korea levels of lighting.

No one is suggesting that we turn off the lights. I’ve listened to astronomers talk about this for years. They usually just want shields on lights to prevent as much light from going up. This is common sense and good for everyone that wants to enjoy the natural beauty of the universe we live in. You should educate yourself on this issue.

Turn off the lights. I like the darkness of night. It’s nice after the hurricanes when everything is dark and house’s are not lit up like shopping malls.

I like to see the stars and wish people would turn off what wasn't needed at night. Every street like everywhere isn't needed either. Why do closed business's have to have lights and signs lit all night?

Just think of the energy savings...they could stop pushing this EV crap.

I am too. I am an amateur astronomer and even in this small town in Texas, the light dome from Fort Worth fifty miles away diminishes the visibility of deep sky objects.

Describe these light shields you desire.
