Evry Marine I know would NEVER say they are an "Ex-Marine".
They hang on to the idea that once a Marine, always a Marine.
See I should have read more responses first. This point has been well made already.

quote:I know several guys who were Marines and they almost all all get pissy when anyone says ex-marine. Once a Marine, always a Marine is usually part of the comeback. I have one guy I work with who doesn't care, he also saw combat and never leans on PTSD when he is a butthead. He owns it as part of his whi he is naturally
Wouldn’t a real marine have said former marine not ex-marine?

It's a good gig if you can get it. I know of a couple rather high profile female veterans who have done very well for themselves by publicly cultivating personas that are kinda-sorta-but-not-really "based on a true story."
But nobody can set the record straight because then they'd be "attacking" A) a veteran and B) a woman veteran. Both are sacred and unassailable. You just have to believe them and give them whatever they want.
One claims (via never correcting others when they write a story or introduce her as):
Fighter pilot
Deployed on a special mission with SOCOM/JSOC
Was wounded by an explosion while on mission with her team
Saw a lot of death on the battlefield
Undiagnosed TBI/PTSD
Reality:
Was involved with aircraft, but not a pilot
Was an acquisitions officer, one time, for a deployed SOCOM unit
A rocket hit the base she was on (Bagram)
The injury was unwitnessed and she did not miss duty
Only knew later on that she had TBI/PTSD from the blast when her marriage and personal life were falling apart
The other:
SWO in the Navy
Claims she was a rescue swimmer, a male dominated field comparable to Navy SEALs
Suffered a head injury while on a combat deployment
TBI/PTSD
Reality:
Was never in a Rescue Swimmer billet, but was just one of the people on the ship designated to help in a man-overboard situation
Head injury was from bumping her head after falling down a hatch
Is now a TBI/PTSD advocate and parlayed all that into an Ivy league graduate education and all sorts of other shite

I like when society gives special privileges to vets. I feel icky when I see a vet attempting to gain (or worse DEMAND) privileges because he is a vet

1000%.
Vets aren’t above being called out for being assholes.

Is this controversial? Who in the world would think every single veteran is a good person? Seems a bit silly.

Go watch some of those Don Shipley You Tube videos where he calls out the idiots claiming they were Navy Seals.

I thought the same thing. I felt like if I talked some shite to a cop I wouldn’t be surprised to be cuffed in seconds

How much was the tab? If it’s under $50 I’m looking at the guy and saying Ty for your service I’ll pay it. Don’t even want to deal with that shite.

My buddy is a Cpt in the Army and he said he gets annoyed at how civilians bow down to people just because they're in the military because he said most of them are not patriotic at all and are just there for a career but couldn't care less about American pride.
