Hell no, we won't go! Hell no, we won't go!
I'm generally not one to care about the affairs of other businesses and their employees, but if a group of striking Waffle House employees singing "We Ready" doesn't get you fired up to take on corporate, I don't know what will. I'm ready to join the picket line.
WaHo employees are on the front lines of the service industry. No other restaurant workers have to deal with even a fraction of what Waffle House employees see on a daily basis — I'd guess that's probably why 24/7 security is on their list of demands. These guys are out there giving their all to provide the best breakfast food and most authentic Southern experience possible and they're getting robbed of $3 every shift even if they don't want to use it? What a crock of shite. Put that money back in the pockets of those making the 3 a.m. drunk All-Star Special possible.
I sincerely hope these employees are successful in their efforts, because no group in the service industry deserves to be taken care of more than those scattering, smothering and covering those golden hash browns to perfection. We need to take care of those who take care of us.

This will be an interesting one to watch play out. One of my buddies has been an exec for them for a long time. They run on super tight margins so this would get passed right back in price increases and from what he’s told me the regular audience is insanely price sensitive.

I don’t even know how they stay in business. The only chain in the world where you can’t place an online order.

That's my understanding. On the one had it's a pretty good deal. On the other, even I would get tired of eating Waffle House food every day.

If you don’t stand with labor, you’re just a pathetic corporate cuck

Obsessive cost control. It’s in the companies dna. He’s told me some stories about looking at stores and how much they could spend for real estate and construction and it made me realize how neurotic they are. The reason every store is the same is because of the efficiency. I think they only have something like 3 floor plans and they’re only slightly different.

I've never had a bad meal at WH. There are some high end restaurants I can't say that about.

Do they still have 15 year Olds manning the griddle at 3am?

I’ve always been amazed by this and the number of meals those cooks can get out in a pretty timely fashion, even when packed.

Incredible consistency. My buddy taught me how to make the hash browns and used to give me a case every year for my bday when we lived by him still. New Year’s Day was always fun because he would man the kitchen and make everyone breakfast while we cleaned up from the block party and nursed our hangovers.

Unions are dumb but so is this $3 mandatory meal deduction policy. Why even do this?

I'll say the same thing I tell my students. If you do not create DEMAND for yourself, you just get lumped in with the rest of the SUPPLY of low skill labor. Doing physically difficult work does not make you indispensable.

There is absolutely no place in between corporate bootlicker and raging communist, right?
