In Kansas City and Jefferson City, we say north and south of the river

St Louis and St Joseph are east and west

I bet if New Orleans was in Missouri, people here would say north/south of the river

I don’t think so, New Orleans is the Crescent city.

I live in New Orleans proper, on the Westbank (Algiers) so I live on the western side of the Mississippi river.

However, I am east of the Eastbank, I am closer to the Prime Meridian than the Superdome, French, Quarter, airport, all of which are on the east Bank.

I still don’t understand why St Louis is considered the gateway to the West

I’m mean I know why but it’s stupid

Algiers is on the West Bank. The rest of the city is on the East Bank.

The funny thing is that, historically, New Orleans was "west" of the Mississippi. The "Isle of Orleans," which runs north all the way to the Manchac, was always considered part of Louisiana, and therefore west, even when Florida reached all of the way to the Mississippi.

St Louis is across the Mississippi River, and most importantly also has the mouth of the Missouri River (the longest river in North America) which allowed for water travel west all the way to the Dakotas (the headwaters are actually in Montana).

One way to look at is this. If you drive in from Lafayette on I-10, you go from the west side to the east side of the Mississippi River as you drive into Baton Rouge. You dont cross back over the river before you arrive in New Orleans!!
