Maason Smith and Omar Speights

Maason at the combine didn't do the bench press, and now I see why. 22 reps.
Omar Speights had 30 reps.
Malik had 15.
And people still think he may go 2nd or 3rd round.

Man they just had double the weight on maasons bench

It doesnt help that he has really long arms.

I've done 21 reps of 225 and I didn't even train for the combine lmao. Maason needs to work a little harder.

Still struggling to see what it is about this guy that warrants a draft pick.

You’re posting about this and didn’t mention his arm length? It has a massive impact and provides separate value.

Smith and Speights are flops.
I don't understand how you can be on the same team as Malik deliver the performances that they have. Just seemed really inconsistent and at time, very low effort.

That’s pretty awesome actually. You’re well in to the 300lb club and that doesn’t happen by accident.

Don’t mess with Poncho. He obviously works out.

I guess Smith is screwed if a bench press competition breaks out of the football field. On the other hand, Speights should be in good shape.
Smith's production (or lack thereof) knocked him well out of the first round. But a GM/coach is going to see the size and potential athleticism (something no one can "coach") and believe they can team him to be a better football player. They'll blame the lack of production on lack of coaching. Not unlike Danielle Hunter when he was at LSU and didn't put up eye-popping numbers.
As for Speights, it's hard to "teach" someone to be bigger, faster, and have quick reaction time. But if you get points for bench-pressing in a game he's probably your guy.

Um, yeah. That's a solid argument, I guess...for the lack of production on the field. Neither did much. In fact, Maason did more early on.
The DIFFERENCE is the eye-popping numbers in pre-draft testing.
MS is 6-5, 301 and ran a 5.01 40 (good) with a 1.75 10 (eh) and a 4.69 shuttle (bad). His vertical and three-cone weren't good either and then 22 reps of 225? Not good.
DH was 6-5, 252 and ran a 4.57! a 4..5..7! Beyond elite! His 10 was 1.57, shuttle was 4.35 and his vertical and three-cone were also high. Then he did 25 reps of 225.
DH's arms were 1" shorter than MS's though so that must have been it, right?
I hope MS makes it, but he didn't perform since his FS season and he didn't test well at all beyond his size.
There are a lot of big guys in the NFL.
I'm sure some team will take him. Maybe the 2nd, but far more likely in the 3rd or 4th.
His lack of recent production and his poor testing won't help.
DH on the other hand, tested through the roof!
THAT is why he was drafted in the 3rd despite almost no production in college.
There's a difference between the two.

His weight-adjusted numbers were all mostly well above average lol

Hmmm. I guess you see what you want to see.
And the NFL goes out of their way to draft "well above AVERAGE"
lol

Smith got bad advice... he should have stayed another year, as Pete Jenkins recommended to him

Fat slob that “clogs” up the middle?
Posted on 3/27/24 at 5:18 pm to ramchallenge
His numbers definitely coincide with his play the past season. No wonder he couldn't get push in the middle. His muscle endurance mixed with lack of strength is whey he got pushed around. Looked like Tarzan, didn't play that way. Should have done another year to get stronger and faster.
He is still likely a 3rd or 4th for a team looking at a guy who played ok his fresh year before the injury. I see career backup right now

If the Saints draft either I will have a stroke. Don’t care what round it is.
