Because nobody pays attention to local politics. Idiots run, and people just vote for a random name or the name that sounds most familiar to them. It has become very difficult for people to learn more about their local candidates now that local news has mostly died out due to the reliance on social media for most news sources. It's a problem

In a rural parish coroner is a pretty sweet deal. You might go weeks or months without having to do anything. In a parish like St Tammany I imagine it's close to a full time job. No competent doc wants to give up a lucrative practice for that.

I dont know the guy or live near St Tammany. Was he found guilty of anything? Or was it just unfounded accusations? Why was he charged but then never taken to trial? Lack of evidence maybe? Was this a case of a girlfriend falsely accusing the boyfriend? I have a hard time believing that the DA failed to take the case to trial, in a timely manner, if he had solid evidence in the case.

Lafourche Parish has a coroner with basically no medical background. She ran unopposed, the previous coroner was a Dr. that forgot to put his name on the ballot.
