Some insane stats from this weekend

MSU was 20/41 (.488) with 2 outs on the weekend. These 20 hits produced 22 runs. Twenty two! two out runs. They scored 33 total.
MSU hit 31 singles. THIRTY ONE singles. in 3 games. LSU had more extra base hits (12) than state (11) on the weekend.
Obviously, our performance at the plate, in the field and on the mound left a lot to be desired. But I think we really ran into a team that just wasn't going to be beaten this weekend. That said; the way MSU scored runs this weekend simply isn't sustainable - and I don't think any team will do that to LSU again this season (nor will MSU do that consistently). I'm not saying I don't think we'll be beaten, but it won't be by 31 singles and 20 2 out hits.
To add insult to injury, LSU was 7/32 (.219) with 2 outs. We also left 26 on base on the weekend.
There wasn't much LSU did well this weekend, so I know it's hard to be optimistic. Holman didn't have his best stuff, and without 3 unearned runs he gets through 5 innings with us up 3-1. Ack shut the door quickly in a save situation. Tommy seems to have gotten back on track after a slow (for him) start to the season - 5/13 3 HR, 7 RBI. Braswell had a nice weekend at the plate - 4/10 with 2 doubles and 3 walks.
We need Kling to step back up in the worst way. We need someone, anyone, to step up and fricking hit the ball when playing RF. It's a god damn black hole out there between Neal, Pearson (who played well in LF this weekend), and Brown. Maybe that guy is Frey if he's able to get back healthy. Milam struggled mightily in his first SEC series (1/10). All of these things will have to be fixed to get us back on track.
The good thing is - it's still March. We have an extremely tough schedule ahead of us, but I'm excited to see how we respond.

Finally a reasonable take after this weekend. I agree with all of these points

Their XBH were timely, too.

We'll learn a lot about this team's fight and resilliency in the next month

That 2-out hit stat is like 3rd and Chavis in football. Unbelievable.

Great post. Agrees with what my eyes told me, for the most part. I knew they had timely hits, but i had no idea it was that many

We take too many good pitches. I am not sure if it’s JJ telling them to work the pitcher but when you get into pitchers counts, the pitcher will win 8-9 out of 10 times.

Hopefully it’s some kind of tendency MsU picked up on and can be corrected. Jay hasn’t given any reason that he can’t fix our problems so I’ll trust him.

Its only a formula most good teams use to win nattys

He’s never really performed at a high level yet

You have to be “up” to step back up

A must imo. He’s got the talent to really bring things together in the OF, but he’s so far from playing to his potential.

Agree with all of this.
Simply put, when we made mistakes, MSU punished us. When we have them opportunities they took them
We did not.
We froze in the moment.
All of those things can be fixed.

Letting perfect fastballs right down the middle go by for strike 3 is a formula teams use to win a championship?
Wow I learn something new everyday

Totals runs: MSU 33 - 18 LSU
Total hits: MSU 41 - 25 LSU
MSU: 41/113 (.362)
LSU: 25/100 (.250)
As OP pointed out, basically half of MSU hits (20/41) came with 2 outs, producing two-thirds of their runs (22/33)

Obviously an outlier and just very fortunate. It’s baseball.
LSU had too many k’s when a ball in play scores a run too

No, but working pitch counts and fighting off/spoiling pitches is. You knew what the frick i meant.
Its early in the season, Jay obviously doesnt want them with the bat on the shoulder with 2 strikes. But honestly, the lineup is really young relative to the rest of the league, that kind of thing doesnt happen overnight for alot of hitters. It worked better last year when we had a lineup packed with juniors and seniors. Now, half our lineup is underclassmen. May take them awhile to master the approach, may not happen this year

If there was ever a stat you can look at and say “that’s just baseball” this is it
