Hal Sutton is Underappreciated

Watching Live From Players tonight, they had a segment about their favorite moments and Sutton beating Tiger in 2000 was one of their favorite moments. It had everything to do with self belief and was an extraordinary feat. They were raving about Hal’s attitude and how they wish there were more players with that same killer instinct now. Really good memory.

I agree.
It was one of the great moments in golf.

The killer instinct for that win was actually spawned at Riveria earlier that year. Hal has said a lot of that game face going into the Players came out of that tournament. I think it almost became a vendetta for him to prove to everyone that Tiger was beatable.
Hal has lead an interesting career. Started off early on with a ton of talent and quite a few wins and a major that took him holding off Jack. I think that people looked at him with lofty expectations after as the next man up to fall into the Jack and Tom category and it probably hurt him trying to reach those goals. I know he actually quit golf all together after the Ryper Cup and got into horses for a while.

Crazy to think that Hal Sutton and Robert Parish were on campus at Centenary at the same time

Not gonna happen anymore. They make wayyy too much money to have a killer instinct. There may be one every decade or so, but most golfers (all athletes) these days don't mind finishing 10th and still banking nearly a million bucks, fly home in their private jet, bang their supermodel wife, and then bro it up with their competitors laughing all the way to the bank.

Slinger I agree, it’s unfortunately become the norm in all professional sports. Can you inagine Laimbeer and Jordan hugging and exchanging jerseys after a game?

Met him a couple of times at Boot Ranch. Very nice guy.
He’s also building a similar course outside of Houston in Columbus called the Darmor club:

Ole Hal is supposedly quite the stickman too

Hal is in the same category as Crenshaw. Neither lived up to the hype as far as major count but still legends in their own way and both had moments no one will forget.

I had the pleasure of attending an event at Champions Club in Houston where Hal Sutton, Jean Paul Hebert, Steve Elkington, & Mr. Jackie Burke spoke. Hal Sutton was the star of the group. Great story teller.

This isn’t some new phenomenon, there’s plenty of older guys that lived this exact life.
There’s a reason guys like Tiger don’t come around very often. They’re a different breed who would sacrifice family and security for winning.
