I'd like to keep BI, but with his upcoming contract extension looming should NO look to move on from him this offseason?

If we win a first round series and BI plays well, pay him. If we lose first round we move on

As the roster is constructed, no. He still has more development on ball. If they ever move on from Ingram, they will need to add a scorer with some isolation abilities to replace him.

And a playmaker. Ingram had 10 assists tonight. He's at his best when he's playmaking.

You are right.
Someone needs to get in Ingrams ear and tell him that how he played tonight is how we need him to play going forward. He blended into the team, and didn’t insist on killing our pace with his ISo. He played through the team and was great.
We played so well tonight. It was a thing of beauty.

This board is nothing but consistent in its overreactions. You realize 90% of Trey's wide open looks come because of the gravity of both Zion AND BI. If this team decides it wants to move on from BI, it certainly won't be because Trey makes him "expendable".

Yeah I agree. The only difference is Trey is making his shots which is awesome but he hasn’t took any other leap in any other areas: defense, passing, in between game. This may be partly due to his injury as well. Trey will get paid because he deserves it but I don’t think hes shown hes a go to guy like Ingram yet.

Murphy and BI aren’t even close to the same type of player.

And at the beginning of the season, Dyson had a couple good offensive games and half this board wanted him start in front of CJ; then a couple bad games and half the board (the same half) wants to trade him for a bag of donuts; Naji was getting brutalized on this board 10 days ago; and on and on and on.

Ive gone back and forth on this all year and BI doesnt make this easy because personally I have a hard time giving him 50m a year and hes not even Batman on his own team.

However, ive been contemplating a scenario where we trade CJ at the deadline next year or in the offseason. We will not retain Larry either. That's roughly 45m in cap space which is pretty much BI's number.

You would have enough money to give Trey and BI there money. Your core for the next 4 years would be:

Zion
BI
Trey
Herb

Your core bench would be:

Dyson
Hawk
Matt Ryan (because he will be had for dirt cheap)

Lets put the financial values on each person now:

Zion 34M
BI 42M
Trey 27M
Herb 13.5M

Total Core: 116.5M

Dyson 5.7M
Hawk 4.3M
Matt 1.2M

Total Bench: 11.2M

Total Team: 127.7M

Possible Retention: Jose ~5M?

What you would need to find:

2 Bigs with a cool budget of ~35M or so

And you still have draft picks to also use.

There are absolutely serious and legitimate questions about whether we should extend BI. But, again, if the answer is no it’s sure in the hell not because Trey Murphy makes him expendable.

The short answer is no because Murphy at his best is still quite far away from BI at his best. So, theoretically, that would make us a worse team.

The basic issue is roster construction. Take a look at our stat line tonight for example.
The starting line up attempted a total of 10 3 pointers. Trey alone attempted 13. Our starting front court of Jonas/Zion/Brandon attempted 1 and made none.

It's very hard to imagine how a team featuring two non-three point shooters as its wings and star players can challenge for a title in today's NBA.

This is a great summation and I could see all that working. But you would stick with Ryan over Alvarado?

It all comes down to money. If Jose takes another single digit dollar deal sure. But we need the budget for the bigs because in theory we could get a really REALLY good one to pair with a draft pick per say.

I would genuinely have Herb practice taking the ball up the whole summer (he is probably going to do this all on his own though). Because our offensive hierarchy is clear: Pt Zion >>>>> everything else.

BI is a better player than Trey and Trey probably wont ever be as good as BI but Trey is a much much better fit with Zion. I think we've all seen that you cant just throw talent together and expect to win. Not around a player like Zion. I would move BI if we can get our Center of the future

Trey was injured for one month and then, yeah, he was broken for the next three months. He's been great for four of six games and poor in two. It'd be great to see an extended stretch of positive play. We know he has it in him so he just needs to show it consistently.

Who? Good centers are way harder to find than most people are willing to acknowledge.
