By the time you figure all the extras required, we pay around $8500/yr. We did this for 2 kids. The youngest is graduating this year and we can't wait for our pay raise. But this is just a small school in Georgia, not some elite Atlanta Bordering school.

Lol, so people that sacrifice by moving to an acceptable public school district for their kids aren't allowed to complain about significant increases in other non-childcare expense areas?

Seems like the opposite should be true where a person choosing to live in an area where Catholic/Private schools are the only viable options should not be complaining about the costs of said schools.

Yeah, we save on school tuition, but we now have longer work commutes and experience increased costs there.

Long story short, kids are expensive.

We paid more in daycare/pre-k costs in our public school district than when we lived in area where we would have eventually sent kids to Catholic school.

average per kid for me as well. I have 2 in kindergarten and 2 in high school, so I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel just yet.

Two kids in private school in the GNO area.

Kid 1 will be in 1st next year. With fees, it is about $27,760.
Kid 2 is in what is essentially their daycare. It is about $16,500.

That does not include after care / enrichment programs for extended care.

10000% YES. I don't want him brought up in the current cultcha of public school. I also want him to learn about Jesus, and be able to pray in class.

For anyone reading- we did this as an alternative to private schools….and it’s working great….

- My wife and I are products of Catholic education. Both reasonably successful with advanced degrees (her).

- I felt my alma mater- where my children would go- had become very homogeneous and based on some interactions with students, and some anecdotal evidence- become quite prickish.

- Our world today is very diverse. That’s not going to change- We wanted to prepare our kids to succeed in a world where people wear hijab, people are openly gay, people come from a million different places. Exposing them to all this now makes it normal. It doesn’t take away our morals or traditional way we raise our kids- but exposes them to other things they will see in life.

-Contrary to popular belief, there are some pretty good public schools in Louisiana. They aren’t perfect, but it’s a trade off. You just have to live in that district.

- So, we found land in that district and built our house there. The spend on the program would be the same as if we would have stayed living in our old house and went to private school. Net investment is a wash in the near term. But our kids will now be able to split a piece of real estate worth $1MM plus when we die if we stay living here.

- Kids are thriving- good/great grades and a social structure (friend group) that I think is superior to what they would have found at the private school they would have attended.

yall say all this stupid shite but if you are successful and get an advanced degree or a stem degree you dont have to deal with that shite. I personally do not have to deal with shitty people at all on a daily basis.

my dad tries telling me the same stuff about society today and working with people...its all bullshite. Sure if you work for a contractor and manage field people all day...sure but for the most part if you get a good degree...you work around others that have good degrees

people you described...dont have good degrees.

I want my kids around good people from good families that are successful where they are surrounded by kids from families of doctors, lawyers, engineers, CPA's, CEOs, etc because the stats show, if you surround yourself with those kinds of people, you will prolly end up as one. also works the other way.

I commend you for being a model supporter for private schools.

My kids school has the best deal. The more kids you send there the cheaper it is. Tuition is about $12K for both kids, but I donate way more than that per year to the school.

It's awesome to see money going to work for my kids' future, the gratitude that is shown by the administration, and the subsequent actions taken by them to improve the school. There is little turnover at my kids' school. That speaks volumes of it's environment.

It seems ludicrous to invest that many years into private schools… just to get them into a state college.

why...do you think a person that is living in mississippi after graduation is some how at a disadvantage having gone to a state school and saved the money? The ROI would say otherwise especially if you major in something stem

also you really should look up 6 year graduation rates from certain private schools and compare them to the local public schools. drastic difference

im talking in some cases...90%+ of a private school class graduates college within 6 years vs less than 20% for the local public school.

Lake Charles has good public school options and my last 2 will prolly go to barbe but the % that graduate college after having gone to St Louis is drastic in comparison. To be fair, those in Barbes AP program have similar numbers but as a whole, drastic drastic difference. same with other good public HS in the area like Sam Houston, Sulphur, Westlake etc

I went to public school, and I do alright. The same goes for my friend group that I made while in school, but I also realize that we are essentially the top 10% of graduates from that school. We're a group of outliers. I don't want my child to have to be some sort of outlier in order to attain success. I want her to have a peer group with successful parents, who know what needs to occur to be successful. Is that privilege? Sure, but don't you want to give your kid as much of an advantage in life as you can?

Metro Houston, private Christian schools
2 kids, 2 years apart with the youngest finishing in 2018

Yearly tuition at the time:

Pre-school thru 3rd grade - $10K per child
4th thru Middle School - $12K per child
High School - $14.5 per child

Both kids have since graduated from college and are doing well. If we had to do it again, would definitely go the private school route.

Maybe don't live where your family has always lived, just because they always have lived there, all the while bitching about corruption and politics and demographics and tax policy and weather and insurance...

this is me 100%, i can count on 2 hands number of males that graduated out of my 3a HS that is considered one of the best publics. A+ rating.

yet my wife went to private and she can do the same for those that didnt graduate. same size schools.

rather play the percentages.

I grew up in an area which didn’t even have a private school option. I enjoyed it. We all went to school together: kids with parents who did very well and kids with parents who really struggled. Success and failure of kids started with home life. Some of us are now doing well and some us dropped out in 10th grade. Had there been a private school option I am sure many of more high achieving students would have gone private.

However we also didn’t have a lot of “culture” or “diversity” in our community.
