I'm almost positive we will sign a vet safety.

We basically have to get another vet safety

Anyway, nice to have Tyrann another couple of years. I'm sure its good for us financially

I'm told the #Saints are re-signing Tyrann Mathieu to a 2-year, $13M deal, per source. Nick Underhill first on the length of the deal.

Piggyback on this to ask a question I had when I saw Justin Simmons getting released.
A lot of safety news this past week. Is the safety position going to start going the way of the RB position, teams thinking they can plug and play with cheaper options, or are a lot of these guys just not worth the contracts anymore?
Justin Simmons, Jamal Adams, Kevin Byard, Eddie Jackson, Rayshawn Jenkins and Jordan Poyer all released this offseason.

Not the worst, he played well but he's getting slow.
Think its a small overpay but oh well, im sure itll be 2 years 13mil and spread it over 5 years with dummy years

He was already under contract, how is it a resigning? Was due $7M in 2024, so are they moving some of that to bonus money (we all know the answer to this) and adding an additional $6M for 2025 - and the necessary 3 void years.

I'm thinking it's more like 2 years $23M spread over 5 years. Has a lingering cap hit of just over $10M from his signing bonus and previous restructure.

It seems everyone wants a interchangeable secondary unit. Pass happy league.

I’ve been wondering this too. I don’t think it’s quite as bad as RBs. You see guys like Bates for Atlanta be huge cornerstones for their defenses. But also like RBs, you can find some diamond in the roughs in the draft and have solid to OK play from those guys. Hell, just look at Jordan Howden for us.
If you take a look around the league, there’s a ton of safeties that’s start for other teams that were drafted in the 4th-7th round

Justin Simmons to the Saints? Make it happen Loomis

Man he was bad at times last year. Committing to two more years feels a little off.

This is the result of the “can kicking” cap strategy we’ve been told on here doesn’t matter/isn’t a problem

this is where its confusing, we already had dead monies tied up in him. So subtract the dead monies from the new monies and thats where the sense makes.

We still are working on getting under the salary cap for 2024 that doesn't matter by the 13th. So extending payroll out to years they will not be playing during doesn't matter.
