GDP: Tommy White edition

Tommy has hit into a double play 5 times this season. Last year he also led the team in this undesirable stat with 9 and he’s almost there already.
He leads 4 other guys by 4 this season. Only 4 other guys have done it, and they’ve only done it once.
Is that what random looks like? Or what is Tommy doing that makes him more prone to hitting into a double play? How do you coach a player to do this less?

More pressure when you are “the guy”
Crews gone

More guys on base when he’s up to bat

You posted this after he hits a hard line out?

I’d be willing to bet he also had more man in first opportunities than anyone else.
He also doesn’t strike out a lot so when you put 2 and 2 together that’s what you get.

“The Guy” Crews did it only 8 times in his career.
Edited: and when Crews was “The Guy”, he led the team in RBIs with 74 before Tommy showed up and only hit into a double once that year. That Guy may not be the best reference point though.
In ‘21, Dugas was our RBI leader and did it only 4 times all season.
So it may not be a product of having guys on base.

If you watched any baseball this year so far you’d know the answer

Reread my question. I’m asking why he’d post this right now when Tommy didn’t even hit into gbdp

A few of his hits have been bloop singles. He is obviously stressing or not seeing the ball well. We have faith in him to come around. It's great seeing the rest of the team playing well around him. He will come around.

Hence him being the best player in the history of LSU baseball

Anyone remember his stats before SEC play last year? I don’t. Wonder if it took him a bit to settle in.

Might come from trying to correct for a lot of high right flares
It’s also a sign of a lot of guys on base
He’s earned the right either way, and I’m confident he will be there in the end

That last one was a bit unlucky. He crushed the ball.

He’s pressing, he’ll be fine

That's an insane stat. Crews was truly on another level.
But to the original topic, I think Tommy has been pressing, and coming off injury hasn't helped. The order is sort of molded to have guys on base when he's up, so the chances of DPs is higher. He tends to hit the ball hard and is also not particularly fleet of foot, which also contributes.

He hits the ball very hard with people on base. Sometimes he hits the ball where defenders are. This results in a higher percentage of double plays.

I can buy that.

Batters that have a lot of guys on base tend to be our RBI leaders. We have to go back to 2012 for the last time our RBI leader also led the team in GDPs, and now Tommy is on track to do it 2 years in a row.
That doesn’t seem random, or a function of having more guys on base than other players on the team.

He oppos a lot which leads to some weak hits on balls not hit squarely which leads to DP when people are on base.
