Big 12 or the field?

Do you think the 2023-2024 NCAAM champion will come from the Big 12 or not? If not, why not?

Just watching UConn on Sunday, it felt like they had it all: physicality, shooting, flow on offense, defense, and coaching. It is hard for me not to pick them.
And, as much as I don't want to admit it, Tennessee looks to me to be the second-best team in the country right now. This season they've won @Wisconsin, against Illinois, Alabama twice, Auburn, and @Kentucky. This is not the same team that lost to Kansas and North Carolina early in the year.
Those, to me, are the two most-likely national champions, and neither are from the Big 12.

no. why not? because if there are 15 teams capable of winning the title, only 4 are from the big 12.
im not sure there are 15 teams capable and im also not sure there's more than 1 big 12 team capable.

i agree with you and know that things change over the course of a season, but kansas is 2-0 against those 2 teams and is the 4th best team in the big 12.

Definitely, but I think those teams have progressed and Kansas has regressed a bit...this year is anyone's game, though!

Looking at the big12 NCAAT performance over the last 15 years or so, and the safe bet would be to pick against the big12.

The problem with UConn is that they're susceptible to teams with a great center and decent three-point shooting, like KU and Creighton.

Id say Houston and Iowa State seem to be contenders. March is so damn fluky though it wouldnt surprise me to see someone like KU, Baylor, or TT turn it on in the tournament and go on a run.

If I had a favorite, I would pick Tennessee to win it all.

it's houston and then it's a tier drop to iowa state, kansas, baylor
as for winning the national title, iowa state would be significantly more surprising than the other 3, regardless of if they are slightly "better" than kansas or baylor.

As much as I HATE to admit it, Kansas is third tier in the Big 12. Houston > ISU - Baylor - BYU > Kansas > Everyone else.

2 of the last 3 national champions. 4 different teams in the final four in the last 5 tournaments. add oklahoma if you go back a couple more.
what conference are you betting on? sec no representatives since 2019. big east is uconn and villanova and villanova is dead. big ten's last final four is 2018.
acc has unc, duke, and then miami last year, which is all legit, obviously.
much like football, though, this isnt about conferences, it's about teams. when it comes to final fours and titles, the acc is irrelevant outside of duke and unc. big east is irrelevant outside of uconn and nova. big ten is entirely irrelevant until it happens again. and so on and so forth.

History is completely irrelevant. It's about the quality of teams this year. The Big East is absolutely not irrelevant with three top-ten teams this year. The SEC hasn't won the big dance since 2012, but with Tennessee, they are absolutely not irrelevant this year, and so on and so forth.

That wasn't the question.

yeah that matters a lot more, but history is hugely relevant in CBB because of the coaching.
it would be extremely surprising if tj otzelberger won an ncaa title at this stage in his career. it would be much less surprising if self, scott drew, or kelvin sampson did, even though iowa state is quite good.
is shaka smart winning a national title?

Probably, but hopefully not this year. I think/hope this is Greg McDermott's year. We're going to be trash next year with our entire team graduating, so it's now or never.

I would go with the field. This season the Big 12 has been more balanced, on any given night anyone can beat anyone. Houston has survived the gauntlet the best. Kansas losing McCullar for a long stretch hurt them. ISU was much better than expected and 3 of Baylor's 6 losses in conference were in OT.
To me there is no clear cut favorite to win it all this year like a few years back when Gonzaga was considered a shoe in but fell just short. Tennessee, UConn, and Houston would be easy picks but I don't believe any of those will eventually be the champ.

Legitimate question: what do you think Creighton's chances are, and why?

No chance, next to the sec, they are 2nd biggest frauds, the rankings and records.
Sec is worst fraud, it's not a good conference this year, I've watched the teams play, yikes.
