Dumb question about police and their parked cars

I went to lunch today and inside there were like 15 or so Georgia State Troopers eating lunch. They were all there before we sat down for lunch and they were all still there after we finished.
One thing that I found really odd was that there were at least 10-15 police cars parked in the parking lot but every single car was turned on and running with their headlights still in and nobody in any of the cars.
I apologize if this is a dumb question, but is there a particular reason why they all leave their cars on with headlights on while they eat lunch? Is it like some kind of procedure they have to follow while eating lunch with other officers?
I just thought it was really strange

Quicker for emergencies. This is why electric cars are better since they burst without engine warm up

Ready to roll, keep electronics charged up, and because they can.
It's probably policy that they stay running.

They love wasting gas. Aka our tax dollars.

Gotta keep those computers running and the a/c on for K9's

Partially to prevent battery drain from all the gear inside, but it is quicker in an emergency so as to not have to boot up many systems that likely go off when the car is turned off. Now why the headlights are on I have no idea.

It's just laziness and to keep the cabin climate controlled. The .2 seconds it takes for a car to start isn't making a difference. If you saw how much money they piss away in excessive idling fuel burn you would have a pitch fork and torch out at your local police department. Also this applies to much more than just police, they just happen to be one of the bigger culprits.

The computer systems they use to run people records and get them directions etc take time to boot up and in the case of emergency those seconds/minutes matter. If you ever get to look inside a modern police cruiser it basically has an entire computer to the right of the drivers seat. ![](https://www.lectronixinc.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/CPVE-Ford-Taurus.jpg)

I would think a cop car pretty much runs the entire shift.
While they are ticketing a speeder.
While they are parked behind a billboard running their radar in speed trap.
While they are buying donuts.
While they are in the 7-11 taking a crap.
While they are working a wreck.
While they are parked behind the auto parts place taking a nap.
A car gets too hot to sleep in - DUH!

It is GA Code § 45-6-15. Waste taxpayer's money at every available opportunity.
Why should they care. It's not coming out of there wallets.

Make them pay for the gas and see if they keep their cars running like that.

Don’t give a shite about wasting tax payer funded fuel. It’s already a burden to walk from the restaurant to the car without a/c, and it’s almost unbearable to think about getting in a vehicle and waiting 30 seconds to get to the desired temperature. Plus, if we can entice Joe Blow to try and steal one, we have a real adventure on our hands.

It’s to keep their computer powered and radios on. If they kill their cars, it will take take 2-5 minutes to get everything booted back on.
