In high school and college, I studied a ton in order to pass. It was second nature. Now I can hardly make myself study and learn even in things I’m interested in. Guess I’ve gotten lazy in my career and not having to stretch my brain.

Starting some courses to pivot into a new career path and am finding it extremely difficult to dive into the material. Even considering getting on zyn or something to help me lock in.

Any of you baws went back to school or started a new career that required studying and learning new topics?

I'm the exact opposite. Didn't crack a book from the 6th grade through sophomore in college (1st 2 degrees mkt/econ) unless I was bored and looking for something to read. Started studying a little Junior year and then Senior year was mainly projects.

Then for my 2nd career I went from finance/banking to a healthcare field and had to essentially learn all the pre-med stuff (anatomy, physiology, microbiology, nutrition, etc.) so I studied my arse off and was always Dean's List and President's List as I approached 40 years old.

If you are having trouble focusing then concentrate on setting aside 1-2 hours/day just reading the course books, eventually the habitual nature will kick in and studying will be routine.

Wait, what? Zyn is probably better for constipation not concentration.

Classes don’t necessarily suck, my brain just has a hard time taking in info and turning it into knowledge lol

You’re either trying to skip steps in the process, or you’re not really focusing, which has roughly the same effect.

When we’re kids, we are forced to learn every basic step because we are tested on every basic step. As we get older, we are tested on final product, and in our arrogance, we tend to believe that we don’t need to truly master every basic step along the way.

Yep, never took a book home in HS. But college was a different tale. Most of my work had to be done outside of class.

I had two classes my Sr year, and skipped one of them for 6 straight weeks. Also worked and played ball.

I fricked around and found out my first time in college. I’m 45 now. I advanced as far as I could without a degree and a boss promoted me on the condition I get my associates degree. I started in August 2021 and now have my associates, bachelor’s, and am in the master’s program and will be done in October. Once you get into a routine and get the ability to time manage well, it gets so much easier. Mine was all online through LSU, so that made it easier to manage time. Many late nights after the kids and wife went to bed, but totally worth it.

I got my MBA after being out of college for 10 years.

It was definitely hard working full time plus going to class/studying, but I actually found it easier to comprehend than in my younger years. The maturity of caring about what I was doing and not dicking around like a dumb drunken college kid was a big difference.

Are you doing online or in-person? I made it a point to be in-person. Online was much harder to pay attention.

I damn near slept through HS. Never studied. College was totally different and I buckled down from day one.

But I got married at the time and had other things going on, so I was motivated.

Most people don't hate learning, they resist the forced structure, to learn what and when, someone else decides.

I did the same in HS but in college I didn’t adjust. Found out after we started dating, but my first wife and I were in the same history class in college.

I didn’t know because I showed up day 1, the midterm, and the final.

I never looked at it that way. Pretty good point you make.

This is the part I like. There’s no subjective grading. Tell me what to do. I do it. I get an A. In other words, it’s not like the jagaloons I work for.

Started back fall 22. Graduating in May. First semester was tough. Its not a challenge now. What I’d suggest starting out is understanding what you have to do to get the assignment right. Don’t overthink it, and accept that it’s okay to not know it all in detail. Don’t put a bunch of pressure on yourself or you’ll explode.
