So with the murder of Navalny, 600 new sanctions have been levied on Russia.
600!!!!
I thought we exhausted every sanction possible on Russia with the start of the war with Ukraine.
What the frick???? 600????
And I bet it will affect nothing. When have sanctions ever caused a country to reverse course?

Sanctions only work when they successfully isolate a country. Russia has access to the BRICS economies so US/Western sanctions won't provide the level of isolation needed.

Biden is just an ineffectual old man screaming at the clouds.

We sanctioned Japan and they bombed Pearl Harbor and tried to control the entire western Pacific. The lesson I get from this is if you sanction and back a country into a corner be prepared for a backlash.

Economically they have an effect, no doubt but not nearly as extreme as those who push them would like. Politically it tends to galvanize the people in power and they can play the defiant victim card.

They have not worked in Venezuela where you still have the Chavez/Maduro gang in power. In Cuba, it has worked but you still have the strong Castro Communist legacy so it really does not. In South Africa you could say it worked, but not really, Mandela came to power and since without sanctions the place is a basket case. Better off with "sanctions". Iran....Ayatollahs still in charge and causing problems despite hard impacts to the economy there.

Russia does not $34+ trillion in national debt.
Russia will be around a long time after the USA has destroyed itself from within.

The Russian economy is simply too large and their resources are too important to cut off from the global marketplace.

The Chinese are also doing everything in their power to support Moscow and the central Asian states are happy to profit off sanction busting. The scale is massive.

I’m concerned that they may have a better future than we do. They never had a chance to take off, for a lot of reasons, it’s everything from the geography to the Bolshevik Revolution which cost them a century.

Agree completely, and even if we wanted to, we couldn’t.

Honestly, the US just needs to stay out of this Ukraine shite altogether. But we simply cannot help ourselves. Never have.

The sanctions are actually helping China, Russia and the Arab oil giants.

Historically you could say that sieges were sanctions: 'We're not gonna attack. We're just gonna starve you to death.' They worked.

Today, it depends on a nation's vulnerability. America is the most self sufficient country in the world (world's most fertile soil helps). So sanctions against us wouldn't have much impact.
Russia's economy is hurting due to sanctions and war is expensive beyond sanctions. But they are not vulnerable enough to sue for peace just due to sanctions.

The sanctions used to work. But with China, Indian, Brazil and other 100+ countries that do not participate in the sanctions, the sanctions against Russia is not working any more.

US is carrying Europe and five eyes and a few countries in Asia. Not enough.

They've spent 220 Billion on the war so far according to Forbes. Their economy is hurting.

Sure, just ignore the Biden reference, it doesn't suit your narrative.
