This is so dumb. No team outside the top 10 is winning a title anyway. I would say 12 is too many and it should have been 8

It never should have expanded beyond 6 or 8 but this isn’t about what’s best for the sport. Only $$$ and they are gonna keep going to juice every last cent they can.

What you guys never address is the bias in the polls. You throw out rankings as if they mean something. They don’t because they are just opinion. Look at UGA. They were ranked #1 all freaking season and lose 1 game by a small margin and suddenly they aren’t even a top 4 team? And Michigan was never ranked #1 and are now the champs. So, the polls were clearly wrong all season. This idea that your team beat #10, #13, and #18 is just pure conjecture. I especially love when they say team A beat the #2 team, yet at the end of the year the team that was ranked #2 is now #21, but they never tell you that.

Look at the early preseason polls ESPN has already put on their website. They are completely biased to set the playoff narrative.

And you guys who say the lower tier have no chance must be young or naive. Every sport that has a playoff system will have upsets. We see it every year. College football is no different. And now you add in depth loss to the portal and more opportunities for injury and I think it’s a recipe for a great time. If the players are gonna shake the schools down for cash then I think it’s great that the sport is making them play more games to earn it. And I’ll be laughing my butt off when these prima donnas that the big boys recruit and cater too at every turn decide to skip the playoffs because their advisors say the risk is to great for their next contract.

All of this was caused by schools and coaches who put winning at all costs over recruiting real student athletes. Now, we all are reaping the inmates taking over. I’m loving it. As a fan of a team that has had no chance the past 30 years because we decided not to recruit people on 4th grade levels to our school, I am enjoying these fanbases twist in the wind as these man-children control your fate.

A single upset? Maybe.

A lower tier school is not going to beat 4 top tier P5 schools consecutively. It's not going to happen.

exactly. determining byes based off polls makes it still invalid. If a team has to play an extra game because of being ranked #5 instead of #4, you cant tell if that extra game changed the outcome.

it'll be fine if a G5 school is in the 5 spot, but what if it's a P5 conference champ. this format leaves that possibility open.

From most interpretations the 5th conference champion doesn’t auto get the 5th seed. They are seeded by rank. So there’s a good chance that the shite tier G5 champion will be ranked 12th and will have to play the 5th seed on the road.

Parity in college football is terrible. This is going to lead to even more all SEC/BIG final fours.

You keep saying this but this isn’t good at all.

I think 14 is a bit much and 12 seems a good number, but will need to see it play out to really judge how it works. I love all the people in this thread speaking in absolutes though as if they are infallible.

Same people that swore up and down the CFP championship game would be a Bama/Texas rematch and there was nothing Michigan or UW could do about it. Or that TCU would lose to Michigan last year.

That’s why we play the games. You don’t know until you know.

TCU had their big upset by 6 points and then lost by a,million points the next week in the worst title game of all-time.

This is this shite we're gonna see in a 14-team playoff.

Question, does the Zombie PAC 12 still have an autobid?

Well they beat Ohio State, beat the SEC champ, beat the team that beat Texas and Oregon twice.

All this is going to do is have blowouts and the random false champion who gets,a 3rd or 4th chance and ignores their regular season because of name...and fricking ESPN just wanting to make money and manufacture outcomes.

This is what we're going to see with a 12-team playoff to be perfectly honest. Upsets will undoubtedly happen in the first round, but the teams with talent and depth are going to flex their muscle in the later rounds. This isn't the NFL where everyone's roster is close to equal. There is a serious talent discrepancy in major college football that will make for some very boring second and third round games.

An expanded playoff and the portal stripping depth is by far the two best thing that could have happened to a sport that has become stale with the same 10 teams the past 30 years. Upsets are going to happen no matter how many times you say they won’t. Most posters here were posting how Bama was just gonna waltz to the Natty and you gave Michigan no respect. We see how that turned out.
just like the fcs playoffs. Surely North Dakota state or one of its rivals don’t win it every single year!

NFL does 14 out of 32 teams

Every season any team can lose to anybody any week.

In college football there are rarely four teams that can beat anyone much less 14

It’s a money grab and an awful idea.

Alabama was the underdog in that game according to Vegas.

BAMA hasn't lost 3 games in 14 years. You must be confusing us with mere mortals.

There are no conference tie ins to the auto-bids. It’s just the 5 highest ranked conference champions.
