13” 308 MCX SPEAR??

Thoughts on this caliber/barrel length combo?
Lots of questions/debates over the SPEAR itself, but I’m mostly curious what everyone thinks of running a 308 with a 13” barrel.
The military version of this rifle is chambered in 6.8x51 (.277 fury) and the pressure is much higher, resulting in more velocity. Makes sense in a short barrel for that but I’m having a hard time rationalizing the short barrel with .308.

I would get a SCAR and send it to Jared at Parker Mountain. He can cut the SCAR barrel and pin your muzzle device to a clean 16.1”. He specializes in the SCAR.
Here is one cut to 14” that is 16.1 OAL.
If you go with a 13” SPEAR I would form 1 it. Having a brace on a 7.62 is not real practical. The braces won’t handle the recoil impulse over time.

It will look super cool. You will hate to shoot it. Everyone around you will hate you when you shoot it.
Besides "because i can" why would you want that? What is it that you gain by going so short?

Well you gain a ton of mobility, assuming it will wear a suppressor. You very well may lose much more, though. Seems awful short for .308.
The only thing I dislike about suppressors is they are absolute ergo killers.

You don’t lose but about 200 fps going from 16 to 13 with 147 gr ammo.

I hope you plan on suppressing it. I’ve got a 556 sbr either 10.5 or 11.5, I double up on ear pro to shoot it. I’d have to imagine 308 gonna be worse. That’s the main reason I went 18 over 16 on my ar308 build.

200fps for 3 inches is way more than I’d have guessed.

I was able to shoot the 556 and 308 spear at a shoot sig event. The 308 suppressed had surprisingly low recoil for a 308. It was one of the better shooting 308s I have ever shot, but it comes with a pretty steep price tag. I can't see any advantage of the 13" over the 16". To me dealing with the SBR/brace over 3" on a large frame rifle isn't worth it. I liked the 556 spear so much I got one. It's my favorite AR platform rifle I have now.

Why can you believe the short barrel in the .277 but not the .308?

Probably 150, but anyone arguing that 50fps is just being contrary. Lol

60,000 PSI for a 308 round, vs 80,000 on a 277. Given the same barrel length and projectile weight, the 277 is going to be much faster because it has more pressure behind it.

The 277 fury is a bad arse round. Hopefully it will become available on the commercial market soon.

That's the whole reason for the 3 pc cartridge. The stainless steel case head can handle the higher pressures.

I’m used to the number being about 25 fps per inch.

I have a 9” Spear LT in 300BO. It’s a sweet shooter.
I don’t see the appeal of a 13” .308, other than LARPing the NGSW. It’s gonna be loud as shite unsuppressed and doesn’t have the subsonic capabilities 300BO does.
The appeal of the Spear, IMO, is that it uses a piston system. That makes it foldable for compactness, to put in a backpack, home defense, or firing from a vehicle. You are sacrificing that compactness by using a 13” barrel, and not getting the full potential from the .308 cartridge while making that sacrifice.
If I would prefer a shorter (6.75” Rattler LT or 9” Spear LT) 300 blackout or a 14.5” 5.56 over a 13” .308.

I have a 12" 308 mainly because of the PSA meme lowers (space cannon). I'm about to run a dead-air pyro on it for fun. Supressed its not that bad tho.

This whole thought process started by wanted to have another option when it come to commonly available calibers if/when we experience another ammo shortage.
I want to add 308 to the mix, but have no desire to lug around a long barreled rifle, plus suppressor. This would be 100% suppressed, so I’m definitely taking the added length vs sound reduction into consideration.
If 13” would get me to 600yrds I think I’d be fine with it. But even at 13” plus the length with a 5” can and I’d still be at 18” overall…
