Open casket funerals are more emotional

Do you think they are necessary?
Why do we mainly do it that way? Is it harder to get closure with closed casket?

The body never looks quite like the deceased.

I don’t like them at all. My grandmother had an open casket and it was terrible it looked nothing like her. She always took a lot of pride in her appearance so I know she would have been pissed.

My nephew was killed by a drunk driver on his 21st birthday about 18 months ago.
It was horrible. But the open casket was the worst part

“They even shot Tommy in the face so his mother couldn't give him an open coffin at the funeral.”

My uncle died when I was 8.
The image of my mom, her brother, and my grandparents going up for the final look and then them closing the casket is ingrained in my memory.
I will never do anything that traumatic. Cremate me and throw the ashes somewhere.

Same with my fiancés grandmother. Absolutely brutal to watch them close it.

My brother passed away back in June after dealing with non alcohol cirrhosis. His last few months he looked awful.
When we had the funeral, I was actually surprised that he looked good. If we did a closed casket, him laying motionless as they pumped on his chest would’ve been the last image I would’ve had of him.

My great grandma died at 103 a few years back. It was obvious they tried to make her look much younger. Very awkward. Don’t recommend.

Agreed. Last year I went to my first cremation funeral and it was the “easiest” one I’ve been too. Open casket is just too much. My grandpa passed last April and I didn’t even look at him during visitation. When I was 24, my grandmother passed and seeing her like that was fried into my brain and I hate having that mental image.

We don’t mainly do it that way. I’ve only been to one open casket funeral in my life out of 10+ funerals tbh. It was weird

Just about completely opposite from me. Where do you live?

When I was a kid one of my friend’s brother died, and it’s unfortunate that’s how I remember him

Never understood them for anyone except maybe immediate family.
Don’t like my last memory being a pic of someone in a coffin

Makes more sense to me in that scenario

One of the weirdest customs we have.

I've been to numerous funerals. 25 maybe. Only one that I can remember wasn't open casket.
