Trey Hawsey 1B/OF West Monroe

Watched LA Tech verbal commit Trey Hawsey last night in the Bayou Jam Home Run Derby. He hit 17 home runs in four minutes. The next closest was three. Then in a 3 inning jam he hit one 400 feet in the first inning and then had one in the second inning go over the foul pole. Wish LSU would give him another look.

A home run derby means nothing with regards to whether he can play big time sec baseball
Nick storz won the national home run derby and couldn’t sniff the field at lsu

Yea, Jay really struggles with talent evaluation…

What's his deal? does he K a lot?
LA tech has become a place where in-state kids are going if they do not want to leave LA. I know some of them have better offers, but along with UL this is prob 2a/2b program in the state right now.

I’m not real sure. Doesn't strike out a lot.
But as the Captain Obvious folks above so graciously pointed out, they are seeing something they don’t like. Which is what prompted my statement, “I wish they would take another look.”
Maybe, because he’d have to be exclusively 1st base or DH. Most, likely, as great as he is, there is just someone else better. But as I said before, and the whole point of this thread, I hope they are continuing to look at him.

He did not. Supposedly, WM coaches wanted some underclassmen to hit too.
And as great as Pearson is, his bat power doesn’t compare to Hawsey.

It may not be that LSU didn’t like him. I know they looked at him. They may have liked other guys better. Or Tech may have given him a scholarship allocation LSU wasn’t going to give, which happens sometimes with in state guys.
Baseball recruiting doesn’t always come down to talent alone. Hawsey is also a 1B/DH only guy. There are only so many roster spots for those types. Especially when you have other guys able to play those spots and other positions.
We have Costello in the same class, though Hawsey made his decision before Costello. And we have another one in the 2025 class.
It’s also possible we weren’t offering the same type of early opportunities he’s looking for. I don’t know Tech’s roster and expected turnover, but we ask a lot of in state guys to redshirt and maybe he wasn’t up for that.

A home run derby tells you really nothing about how someone is as an every day baseball player other than how well can they hit 50mph meatballs.
Hawsey probably is only a 1B/DH at this level which limits his versatility and 1 thing to note is he is ahead of almost everyone else he plays against because he's been 19 since late last year so thats 1 thing you really have to note.
LA produces baseball talent and in-state programs outside of us certainly get good players but the level we recruit at Hawsey is not someone we are in the position to take a risk on. He's a guy if he blows up at a program like LA Tech and works out we can get in the portal in a year or two down the road if we have a need for a 1B/DH type.

Not sure why the 2 best hitters in the state weren’t allowed to put on a display. I do know those 2 played rock/paper/scissors to see who participated. Seems every school involved underclassmen except OCS, maybe rules don’t apply to them.
Anyways, the ball got dropped there imo!

As for the topic. I’ve watched Hawsey for a long time. As one poster said, there has to be something they don’t like. Because imo, he is an SEC bat, maybe even draft worthy. His hands are elite. Like any big time power guy, he can get a little pull happy. But he makes the adjustments and locks in when he needs to and focuses gap to gap. He’s done a good job working on his body and speed. His speed has really improved. Plays a competent OF but is a 1B/DH. I’m more surprised that an Ole Miss or Auburn hasn’t come calling, so that kinda tells me something. Those guys are way smarter than me, but I think Trey is SEC caliber with the bat.

He has signed with Tech. It is a done deal.

who gives a frick what your opinion is on that. its good for the kid to be held back. his parents sound smart to me.
my middle will be 19 start of freshman year of college and i would like to hold him back again and have him be 19 his whole senior year.

Uh, teams have a similar opinion to it. You hear about older HS kids having a little less draft stock for certain teams all the time. It’s obviously not an end-all-be-all, but it’s at least somewhat of a factor.

Some of that is due to an outsized impact on models by Mike Trout.
Bobby Witt, Brett Baty, Jordan Lawler will offset that and there will be a normalization.
Really only super model-heavy teams are concerned about how much older guys are than their peers at draft time, and really only for the big big money draftees.

I don’t think it matters a ton past high school but a 19y 3mo is a huge difference in high school where some of the kids are just 15-16.
On the recruitment front, I think they become a little more difficult to project due to being older than everyone.
