About to pull the trigger on this scope. Some background: hunting with a .308 BLR, food plots maximum 200 yards, some woods/trees hunting, having trouble seeing at dusk with a hand me down Nikon scope. Looking to upgrade significantly. Spoke to the gentleman at scope optics and he recommended this model. Don’t think I need ballistics reticle or turret due to relatively short distance shooting. Any help much appreciated!

It has fantastic glass and sounds like a good fit for your use. The end.

I hunt out west off of horseback at longer distances, so I use more robust (at least in my mind) NF optics. That's the only reason I could see getting something different.

I have the Z5 2.4-12x50 Plex on my .308 Bergara. I love it so far. Very light weight and great glass.

No issues with the ring mount?

I used the Tally medium aluminum rings to mount and it fit pretty well. It does make slight contact with my scope caps and I can slightly see my suppressor through the scope. I just ordered the same mounts in High. Should be good to go after I install those.

I don’t have the exact model I have z6 2x 12 and not illuminated. The Swarovski glass is awesome but if I could change anything I would get illuminated if it’s adjustable. Also I would rather higher magnification than lower. I never use 2 power and shoot almost exclusively 6 power but would like the higher magnification to be able to see more detail down range whether it’s target shooting or hunting

I have the X5i 3.5-18 x50. Glass is amazing. The price wasn't amazing.

For what you want you won't be disappointed in the Z5i.

I was reading online that the 50mm lens might look out of place or silly on a BLR. Most of them on another board were using 30-34mm lenses, but that defeats my purpose of low light visibility (I don’t see good at dusk). I really don’t care about looks as long as the scope is compatible with the gun. I guess I will just need taller ring mounts for the lens. Thoughts?

Sounds like a great scope, but I wouldn’t put a 50mm bell on a BLR.

Also, do you use binoculars?

Yes. I have nice leopold binoculars. One of the reasons I want a new scope is that a couple of Saturdays ago, I was hunting around dusk on a cloudy day and watching 3 doe looking with my binoculars. Once I pulled my scope up I could barely see them.

Maybe I need to buy a new gun after all. I was trying to just buy a new scope but if it’s not going to fit, I might need a whole new setup?

Any modern “HD” glass is going to allow you to see past legal shooting light in a 40mm objective and an illuminated reticle. The difference between a 44mm objective and a 50mm in a 30mm tube is almost unnoticeable, which is why you see them offered. 50mm is gonna require particular height rings and is gonna add some weight, just a few things to consider.

Pretty good deal on A demo model at Europtic for $1349. It does have the BRH-I reticle.

A 50mm scope will require mounts that have the scope higher above the barrel. Find a quality scope that fits the rings and clears the barrel on the BLR and you’ll be good to go.
The amount of light available at the end of legal time varies by the conditions of the day and the location of your stand. I hunt for mature bucks and does. At last light, it can be difficult to verify those targets, regardless of optics. There are days when I end my hunt before the law allows because I don’t want to shoot the wrong deer.
I would much rather have $1,200 binos and a $600 scope that the other way around. You’ll use the binos a whole lot more than the scope and quality binos will also help with target identification when it gets late.

I was given a BLR .22 for my tenth birthday. I’ve always intended to get one in a deer caliber, but have done it yet. That .308 BLR is a great woods rifle.

Should be. I’d go to a gun shop and try to find a scope that fits in the bases and rings you have now.

Just bumping this thread to try and find a gun shop or gunsmith on the Northshore that will help me see what will fit my rifle. I think I’m down to two scopes:

Swarovski z5(i) 3.5-18 x 44mm
(Many on other message boards call this a near perfect white tail scope)

Or since I don’t shoot relatively long distances…..
Swarovski z3 3-10 x 42mm

I’m all about Swarovski. I own Zeiss, S&B, Leica and more. At the end of the day; they are all very, very good. I’m sold on Swarovski for their customer support.

I’ve got an old pair of 10x42 Binos I bought new in 2000. Literally; 24 years old. When I got back from Safari in Africa I was a bit worried about them. They’d got some sand/wind exposure and made a grinding sound when making adjustments. The caps had also dry rotted over time. The model I have has been long since discontinued.

I called and they insisted that I send them in, so I sent the binos in for service. Not only did they replace the eye caps and covers; they sent a new harness too. As good as new and back in a few weeks. They also sent an invoice showing a $0 balance.

That 42mm is all you need to 800 yards.

That’s really cool….

I was hoping they would make the z3 in illumination but they don’t. Would hate to get 29 minutes past sunset on an overcast day and didn’t spend the money on an illuminated reticle…..
