The Commission is only going to back the pogie boats up a half mile

This just came across my screen. New Menhaden Rules. I guess a half mile is still better than the present quarter mile. Maybe.

There will be a public hearing, then approval from a Senate oversight committee.
Shame on CCA for agreeing to this bullshite.

We are consistently a bottom state in everything. So instead of just looking at what the majority of gulf states did, we just say frick it we know better. Even though all we know is the bottom. And I say this about generally everything with louisiana, not just this single issue.

imagine that. greedy arse politicians giving the pogie industry a light slap on the wrist

Must have gotten paid, like they did with the tidal waters/land owners blocking canals.

Exactly what I said when this came up. They can send all the emails opposing it they want in order to get more members, but behind the scenes, follow the money.

That sucks.
The politicians give zero fricks about what’s best for the state

CCA is a crock of shite as are our greedy politicians.

Does the state of Louisiana make any tax revenue from the pogie industry? Or is it strictly donations to our politicians?

This is some serious bullshite

Can you please post some of the story? It’s behind a paywall.

The commission simply is bought and paid for. No other way around it. Many times they said “we don’t want the public coming after us.” Well if they would DO THEIR JOB of enforcing Conservation which is in their bylaws then the public wouldn’t need to come after them.
One commissioner even said that the public doesn’t mind them on the beach, they just don’t like the fish spills.
Who TF are they talking to?
Of the 591 public emails sent in 404 were explicitly in favor of the 1 mile buffer and 3 mile buffer for Rutherford and Holly Beach. Another 156 wanted STRICTER regulations and buffers. Only 31 were against the NOI.
560 > 31
The commission is bought and paid for. Anyone who says otherwise is brain dead.
Quotes from the article linked above
“Thursday's unanimous vote sets a proposal in motion that amounts to a step back from what had previously been advanced. It would set a buffer zone of a half-mile off the coast where fishing for menhaden, or pogy, would be banned. A wider buffer would be in place for particularly sensitive areas, such as the popular fishing and resort areas around Grand Isle and Holly Beach.”
“ More steps are needed before the proposal can take effect, including a public hearing and the potential approval from an oversight committee in the state Legislature. But the compromise nature of the proposal will likely help ease the way to final approval.
Since more time is needed before the rules can become final, the commission also adopted an emergency measure to have the regulations take effect for the upcoming menhaden season beginning April 15. The emergency measure applies only to this year and will expire if the permanent rules are not officially adopted.”
“ State biologists assert that bycatch of trout and redfish has been relatively minimal, but others argue the science is still emerging on the issue and the full picture is not yet known.
Industry representatives say they have begun voluntarily employing new equipment such as stronger nets to make tears less likely.”

The thing is, Omega and Daybrook only have to pay off a couple of key legislators to carry their water (cough cough Connick and Orgeron), so it doesn’t even cost them that much. Our crooked legislators are masters of quid pro quo, so a vote protecting the pogie boats is repaid by a vote for some sort of graft or pork in the other legislators’ districts.
Anyone and everyone serving in a political office in Louisiana, state or local, is for sale. Anyone with half a brain can see that in no way do any of them represent the will of their constituents, unless it also enriches them personally.

Pogie boats provide a lot of jobs for Louisiana residents, which the board seems to be blind to.

Remember, the commission isn’t an elected body, it’s a political patronage group. They don’t give two shits about anyone coming after them but maybe we should.
It’s pretty easy to find out what reps are on the take and they’re being bought off for pennies on the dollar as their constituents loss is immeasurable .
It’s been this way forever in Louisiana .

Huh?!? An estimated 90 jobs at the cost of our most precious resource? frick that.
The Board of Commissioners isn't blind whatsoever. In fact, Omega's processing plant is located in Abbeville, which is where Commissioner Kevin Segara resides. Coincidence?
