their best player is likely to get nerfed pretty hard in the playoffs, so I’ll believe it when I see it from Shai.
He'll be fine, he'd still be by far and away the best player in a series against the Pels.

When two teams are relatively evenly matched, go with the best players in a playoff series. Mavs are worse but have the two best players. Thunder is more of a toss up on the player level, but they’re a much more complete and better constructed team. I wouldn’t take Pelicans against either but we have a shot!

I am truly not trying to be a contrarian dick, but let’s be realistic

SGA is an MVP candidate; he is having an historic season.

holmgren is a beast. He’s clearly the best big between the two teams. Jalen Williams is probably the steal of the draft from 2 years ago and a likely all star next season

There is no player on the pels roster that any GM would trade for if it cost one of those three guys. It sucks donkey balls but the thunder have passed us and lapped us

The Athletic has us at #9, not in the "Contender" category, but "On the Brink of Contention." That seems about right.

I get it, the record is solid, season going well so far.

But "on the brink of contention" means you're close, or you're a couple of small moves away from being there, or just needing time for your core to develop to get there.

I just don't see that with us. I truly don't think a ZIon/BI 1/2 will ever be a contender, and if you're missing the top 5-10 stud that you need to get there, then you're not really on the brink, but you're actually a long ways away.

Zion is just such a question mark for the rest of the season and for his career. His explosiveness looks gone in a way that goes beyond weight and conditioning. There's really no good explanation for that, so we have no way of determining if it's permanent.

I disagree. I feel like we've seen it in spots. Him blowing by guys, crossing up guards at the top of the key, he's still doing that, it's just not nearly efficient enough now that

A)the league has adjusted
B)he hasn't added anything to his game.

He's explosive, but he's not year 1 or year 2 Zion explosive.

He doesn’t finish nearly as strong at the rim as he used to, which is a problem considering how bad his hands are

Probably the best evidence of this...

Percentage of Zion's shots(not FG%) that come within 0-3 feet:

- Rookie Zion: 74.%
- Year 2 Zion: 69.6%
- Year 5 Zion: 58.3%

This number has gone down in each season of his career.

And you can't really argue that he's adding other elements to his game, we know that is not the case.

From 3-10 feet out, he's gone from 18% of his shots in that range to 37%. But in each of the last 3 seasons, he hits those at 41%, so he's not getting any better. It's basically a loss for the Pels every time he takes 1 of those, and he's doing that a lot comparably.

0-3 feet is the only place he's efficient, and 42% of his shots are NOT in that area.

Zion is officiated the same now as he would be in the playoffs, I believe. That said, I never just magically assumed he’d be December Z in the playoffs. It’s the same with him. TBD.

Fun fact: The Pelicans have played (41) conference games. No other NBA team has played 40 conference games. Every team above us in the west has played 34/35/35/33/34

MIN- 34
OKC- 35
LAC- 34
DEN- 33
PHX- 34
Pels-41
DAL- 38
SAC- 35
LAL- 37
GSW- 33

33-22 at the break is solid knowing that stat.

Yes i see your point. I like Holmgren a lot but Zion can impact the game more right now. SGA would be best player on the court though for sure. In general OKC is just a much better team. And they have many more assets. Griffin should take notes… he’s wasted all our assets.

I think what he's implying is that players who rely on free throws and foul calls heavily usually do worse in the playoffs, see one Jim Harden.

ETA: or hell, even Embiid
