I'm at the point I destroy someone's mortar sentry if we are on the move or I don't like where they dropped it

Why are so many people playing it?

Should I buy it?

I'm not super up on all the squad shooters. The closest that I've played like this is The Divison, but other people might have better answers. It's a squad of up to four running around a map clearing objectives and fighting AI enemies.

So many people are playing it because it's good, simple fast paced fun with thoughtful progression and no over the top microtransactions. The vibe is similar to Starship Troopers with a ton of epic heroism and cool mechanics.

I bought it and have zero regrets. They will be updating it for a long time it seems and I will be playing for a long time.

Deeprock Galactic is the closest comparison if you've ever played that, for like the structure of the co-op

This is a 3rd person shooter with drop in co-op which is working pretty well right now. It has persistent ship upgrades / weapon unlocks that carry between missions. Drop into a mission, complete the objectives, try to extract.

There are 2 fronts you fight against, bugs and robots. Think starship troopers and terminator 2, which are both heavily referenced. There are overall objectives that every player who completes certain types of missions contributes too.

It only takes 5-6 hours to understand the gameplay loop and what's going on, but it just has really satisfying gameplay combined with procedural generation elements.

Why do some hosts have us drop in right on top of enemies at the start of a mission?

I can't even call down my loadout because I'm getting murdered by 6 Chargers, 12 Stalkers, and 4 Brood Commanders

For me it boils down to what I'm after.

If I just want to blow through the objective then gtfo for the quick exp, then I am dropping near the objective.

If I am wanting to harvest Samples, Merits, etc. then I am dropping somewhere which forces me to cover more of the map to get to the objective(s).

For some, it's likely that they just enjoy getting straight to the wholesale mayhem.

It's a lot of fun. The high-level view is that it's a co-op over-the-shoulder-view PVE game where you kill everything between you and your objective before it kills you. Friendly fire exists (for both players and NPCs) and you have levels which can unlock better gear.

The mission can be quick and easy or long and challenging. Missions have a time limit, but what that limit means is that after it expires you lose some bonuses and the amount and strength of enemies increases.

I haven't played a lot of these, but this one is really fun because of a few factors.

1. The graphics are beautiful. Even though it's not the most powerful stratagem, I love calling down napalm because it's such an orgy of explosions for the eyes.

2. There is an ongoing story with people managing it. You never know when a world will see a pushback on its liberation and there can be bonuses for helping with certain gamewide objecives.

2a. While the individual mission objectives are somewhat static, placement of stashes and objectives are procedurally generated so no two maps are exactly the same. Also, each player's choices in gear, experience and modules can change the dynamic of team play. Combine this with point 2 and it's a very fluid game.

3. Missions are quick and easy to get into (now that they've tamed the queue beast) and you can set your difficulty from Trivial to Helldiver. With that, you can see other active missions on the planet you are orbiting and join them or go off on a mission on your own (which others may join).

4. The over-the-top pushes on the themes of democracy, liberty and prosperity keep the game far more light-hearted than something like CoD (which is PVP, but you get the idea on differences in themes). That along with it being a co-op PVE helps keep the toxicity low (at least thus far) and that's a biiiiig plus for me.

Not sure if this is common knowledge but you can blow those illegal broadcast towers up. Quick way to complete that side mission.

eta: the ones with the red screens or banners around the top of the tower.

Read some of the "training tips" on the loading screen when your capsule is heading towards the planet. One of them mentions that when coming across ancient alien ruins, only a traitor would explore them (or something very similar).

There is an ongoing story with planets being liberated or overrun, I think there may be another story with the Super Earth government.

I was just in a Hard mission where someone's mortar sentry killed the host as we were about to extract and we'd run out of time on the mission so he couldn't be reinforced.

Felt awful for him. I had been the only one using a mic but after the game he got on and told the person to stop using the mortar sentry

That stratagem has killed more teammates than enemies, by far

Absolutely. You really have to know how to use it. The only safe spot is an extraction and it still gets you

Mortar is super powerful but you had damned well better not let enemies get too close to you.

I prefer the Gatling, but I try to position it with a barricade between it and the LZ (or some other way for me and the team to avoid it shooting in our direction in case we get enemies coming in from the opposite direction).

Oh yeah. People love mortar sentry in easy mode but on challenging on up when monsters are spawning right next to you you’re just wrecking your team.

I’ve had success with mortar sentry on difficulties up to suicide mission. It’s not something to throw out there when there’s a breach/drop ship. I used it when there isn’t a patrol nearby and when we’re about to lay siege on an outpost. It was one of my fav strategems before I hit lvl 20 because of its effectiveness as long as your squad wasn’t running gung-ho into combat.
