Brian Kelly about defensive tackles

Here is what he said about defensive tackles moving forward this year. From Wilson and Shea.
quote:
Brian Kelly indicated #LSU could add other players during the signing window over the next week, especially at defensive tackle. "We still have some needs. The defensive tackle position is one we’re still vetting."
quote:
Brian Kelly was asked if #LSU would move some defensive ends to defensive tackle this spring. "Yup." Didn't yet say who would slide
inside.
quote:
Brian Kelly said they will test out some offensive linemen as defensive linemen during spring ball. He wasn't ready to say names, but did say to "expect movement there". They will get a better feel for the guys through workouts in the coming month.

Moving players from one side of the ball to the other 1) sets them back in their progressions at their normal positions, 2) communicates to them that they are at the back of the line at their normal positions, and 3) encourages them to look elsewhere in the transfer portal.

Was expecting a bit more optimism on landing some transfer DTs.
Not surprised to see edges sliding in, all things considered — but if we are seriously looking at converting OL, then this is the worst news of the offseason by a long shot.
ETA: Partly because this has otherwise been an incredible offseason.

Better hope we get some stud DT's in the spring portal with NIL

I could see Kimo and MBenga getting looks as DT. Both seem to be stuck behind depth and were more on the raw athletic side as recruits anyway.

Here's the press conference in case anyone wanted to listen: LINK

Could Connor Gilbreath be looked at for DL?

I've been predicting the first...mentioning Shand and S Jones specifically. For those who somehow think there is a minimum weight to play DT, I disagree...depends on the player. Both Shand and Jones are supposedly 280+...that is pretty large for an end guy to begin with.
As far as the second quoted text, yeah like most here I'm not too keen at that. I'm trying to remember LSU succeeding at moving OL to DL or DL to OL. Might have been one but mostly fails. There is a reason those players were on one side of the ball in HS and were recruited in college for that side of the ball. They have a better chance of success.

Shand will move inside to play 3-tech. Savion Jones could as well. You want Bradyn Swinson on the outside and Perkins will obviously be on the edge. It will be interesting to see if they try to bulk Womack up a bit and have him as a hybrid that plays outside mostly but may kick in on pass rush downs like a NASCAR package with all your speed son the field. Nose tackle is all Tank Guillory’s. He has the opportunity of a lifetime to showcase what he’s got he’s got because right now we don’t have many other guys with his size and strength. Maybe Jalen Lee fills in as a backup but I think more likely we see the JUCO kid Washington as the primary backup at NT. Hopefully we can find at least 1 solid starting or rotation interior player and preferably 2.

Didn’t Saban do something very similar with offensive linemen his first year here?

Doesn’t sound ideal.

How did we lose two defensive tackles in the portal? And is Langston able to return?
West, Hill and Langston have to be better than converting and edge or offensive lineman right?

Was told to me that Charlie Mac never recruited offensive linemen. If not good enough for defense, then moved to offense. Info from former CM defensive back coach.

wow what a disaster of a program to that we gotta rely on OL to play DL. Alabama has 10 DT's just chilling just in case they need them

Not saying any of the guys in the conversation will be him, but the only successful move like this was done by CBK.. Jerry Tillery worked out fine..I remember him being a big time OT with untapped potential. I was surprised he ended up a first round pick at DT, it also came during a period where we were searching for our next great defensive lineman…
