Need recommendations for a hog gun

What gun do you guys recommend for hunting hogs? I don’t have an AR so I’m leaning to buy one, but idk if the round is enough for a hog. I want to put a thermal on what ever gun I get. I don’t know if I can afford a thermal and gun in one year…it might be two year process .

It is plenty, and I think it's the best choice. Cheap to shoot and usually accurate.
That said, hogs are a great excuse to use whatever you think is coolest.

Just build an accurate one, ear hole em with any caliber in an AR platform and its pork chops! Then again if I built one exclusively for pigs, the 400 Legend sounds interesting?

AR in 6.5 grendel if you don't think 5.56 is enough

5.56 55 grain M193….the old white box Winchester range ammo has killed many a hog at my place. And it’s accurate. We aim for the ear hole
$0.60/rd
I’d highly suggest building your gun if you’re not in a rush. It’s not hard at all. My kid has transformers that are much more difficult.

Get you an entry level AR baw and explore with some uppers! Very inexpensive and easy.

I second the Grendel. Probably the most versatile in the AR platform. Great whitetail round as well.

I have 2 300 blackouts that were built mainly for hogs and for my son to shoot. I've never had any issues when shooting hogs. Hornady 110g rounds.

My 6.5 Grendel is like Thor’s hammer. 6.8 SPC is a good hard hitting round. Put a Pulsar Thermion on it and pew, pew, pew.

Around how much should this cost me ? I was looking at some for $1200.

Id agree if building a new weapon. Also keep tour build light weight as possible. If you add a thermal and a can to your build it can get to heavy.
Not sure where the original poster is hunting. Terrain makes a huge difference in caliber choice. We hunt in and around thick undergrowth. I prefer a heavier round to knock them down quickly since you don’t want to be tracking, mostly get one good shot and to cover my bases when I dont get the perfect shot selection.

$1200 is going to be upper lever entry. I got a Smith & Wesson 5.56 for less than $600 and have bought additional uppers from Palmetto for around $300.
$1200 would get you a ready to go rifle and 2 more uppers and you would have 3 different guns.
5.56 rifle + 6.5 Grendel for deer/hogs + 300 BO for subsonic/suppressed shooting.

Federal soft points in 223 will drop a hog.
I have 2 ARs in 7.62x39 that will do the same. Ammonused to be cheaper pre ban.
Make sure you buy the bolt from Black Rifle Arms. They designed one for that round specifically. I haven't had an issue with them.
Broke an extractor off of another milled out bolt from another company after about 800 rounds.

You can kill hogs with a .17 as long as you aim for the ear.

And in case you didn’t know…..5.56 guns can shoot .223. Not the other way around.
I just wanna throw that out there.

6.5 Grendel is what I hunt with on my thermal setup. It does the job, but on larger hogs , broadside hogs still run 30-40 yards, using 123 grain SST’s. 308 is better if you want no tracking IMO, but for light recoil and f/u shots and decent suppression, I tend to favor packing that Grendel around.
