Joe Dean hired 3 NC winning coaches and owns 95% or so of LSUs National Championships as AD. It could be argued that he is the Most Decorated AD in LSU sports history.
Yeah hired Sam Seemes, Pat Henry and Nick Saban. He also hired Curly Hallman. He did not hire Mike Archer sorta. Arnsbarger screwed LSU in that deal.
During his tenure, Dean oversaw arguably the greatest athletic era in school history. The LSU baseball team won five national championships (1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000) while the men's and women's track teams accounted for 22 national championships combined, including a record 11-consecutive NCAA Outdoor Track and Field championships by the women's team. At the time of his retirement, the 27 national championships under Dean's guidance were an SEC record.
The LSU football team won one SEC Championship (1988), two SEC Western Division Championships (1996, 1997) and four bowl victories (1995, 1996, 1997, 2000) in his 14 years. Among Dean's final major decisions at the helm of the athletic department was to hire Nick Saban as head football coach.

Wikipedia says he became a consultant for donor relations at LSU in 2019. I’d guess he held that title until his contract expired, and then he retired. He is 71 years old.

LSU struggles with hiring a good AD.
Same way we won titles with Miles and O. LSU manages to have success despite leadership.

Miles had just won 11 games and the Sugar Bowl. No one would have fired him to hire someone who just bombed out in in the NFL. No one knew what Saban would later accomplish.

quote:this is so stupid. Could you imagine the laughingstock lsu would’ve been at the time across the media and country if they fired Les Miles at that time? Back to back 11 win seasons and then in the third year he won a national championship. How dumb would you look to fire someone with no cause with that track record? Good Lord
Bertman was the worst by far for letting Mal Moore bring Nick to Bama instead of giving Miles a buyout and bringing Nick back to LSU.
Worst decision in sports history
It’s Why Nick is still salty towards LSU

I don’t understand how Bertman gets so many passes for his awful AD moves.
because he hired a guy that won a Natty in Football, a guy that won a Natty in Baseball, a woman that led Women's basketball to 3 straight Final Fours (was interim who led them to their 1st final four, so in reality led them to 4 straight).

A lot knew but I agree and don’t really blame Bertman. Les was humming at that time.

Yeah hired Nick Saban
no he didn't.
Mark Emmert did.
Emmert came out publicly and straight up said he was going to do this hiring and not Joe Dean.
he then went out and got Saban.
Dean was even quoted specifically as saying we paid Saban too much and he would have gotten him cheaper.
Would Saban have come here for less money?
Nobody knows.
But we do know that Joe Dean never would have gotten to that dollar amount.
And refusal to play with the big boys financially is what always held LSU back before.

Worst decision in sports history
only when viewed with 20 years of hindsight and not with the info available at the time that decision was made.
Les was just finishing up his 3rd 11 win season.
had actually won more games with Nick's players than Nick won with Nick's players.
NOBODY saw what Nick did at Alabama coming. and if anybody says they did, they're lying to you.
Sure everyone thought he would be good and maybe even bring them a title. But there wasn't a single person anywhere that truly saw him becoming the greatest coach ever in his sport.
Hell at the time, Urban Meyer at Florida was considered to be better than Nick. Les wasn't given that respect yet, but was winning at a rate that was being spoke of very highly.
So Saban wasn't even thought of as the best coach in the SEC when Bama hired him. Let alone the best the entire sport had ever seen.

Who was AD when Saban was hired?
I love how you fricking tools always bring up this bullshite. The A.D. gets credit for the coach when they’re hired. Just like he got shut because of Archer

What A.D. has the most national championships in the history of LSU Sports?

You don’t know frick. Who is the A.D? Who was the fricking A.D?
Just like he got credit for archer he gets credit for Saban. While Emmett was the president, it didn’t mean that he hired him. It’s just like saying Tate hired Brian Kelly. Because he really did. Kelly is not at LSU unless Tate hires him.

not even close to the same situation.
Joe Dean was on his way out already.
so Joe Dean and Mark Emmert both openly spoke about the fact that Joe Dean wasn't doing the coaching search.
It was very public knowledge that Joe Dean was not hiring the coach. Joe Dean even will tell you all he did was assist and help provide contacts.
Sure Woodward answers to Tate, but Woodward did the search, Woodward found Kelly, Woodward hired him.

When Saban was hired, who was AD? AD gets all the credit and fault.
With that, I don’t give Dean credit for the 5 National Championships for Skip. I give him credit for all those Championships for track - which are more than any AD

Bergman tripped on his d*ck over that one. Biggest mistake in college athletics ever.
