re: Who’s the worst draft choice in Saints history?

Ricky Williams wasn’t so much as a bad pick as he was the product of a horrible decision to sell the entire draft lot to move up and pick him. Then Mike Dikta proceeded to make stupid coaching decisions where Williams was concerned and ruined him. Williams then became a complete nut case by the time he moved on. Had the potential to be a great NFL back.

Turner and Penning are up there.
Turner just a whiff at this point. Penning has potential to move way up given the movement to get him.

Dunno but I know who the worst poster on saints talk is.. congrats!

Russell Erxleben.
End of story.
We took a punter in the first round. Nothing will ever transcend that.

Ricky Williams. Mike “Dumbass” Ditka gave up six draft picks to move up and draft…a running back.

Ricky Williams. Especially considering what was given up

Shawn Knight and Russell Erxeleben

We traded an entire draft for a RB that spent his best years with another team
The whole “we traded our entire draft for Ricky Williams” is cliched, and the idea that it was the Saints “worst” draft pick or really even a bad move is just flat out wrong.
San Francisco trading 3 first rounders
to pick Tray Lance was far worse trade in terms of what they gave up and who they picked. SF also got zero production out of Lance and traded him for a 4th rounder, as compared to Ricky’s PT with the Saints and being back two 1sts.
But the real answer to the Saint worst pick has to be Erxleben because he was a freaking punter. I’ve always disdained Alvin Toles and taking Alex Molden over Eddie George, but no one will ever top taking a punter as a bad pick.

We could have have a dominant secondary by taking eric widdle or chris houston. Might have netted the saints a few more championships with a better defense
But nooooooo these dumbasses had to select robert meachum as another WR when they did not need one
And Jason David continued to get burnt

I'll enlighten you... Russell Erxleben. How do you spend a first round pick on a kicker/punter? The dude was drafted 11th overall, for God's sake! He was such a bad kicker, he ended up only punting for his last few years with the Saints.

Williams was definitely not the worst. He was at least decent for us and the draft capital we gave up was a wash because we actually got 2 1st round picks back when we traded him to the Dolphins.
What did we do with one of those Miami 1st?
We traded UP and drafted Jonathan Sullivan 6th overall
He was the worst. Never in shape, contributed nothing in his limited time, wasted draft capital (2 1st), and was an absolute joke. And the stories about eating in the press box pregame cemented his horrible legacy

It’s not just that he was a punter and was taken in the mid first round (Ray Guy was taken in the late first round by the Raiders). It’s that we had so many holes as a team the thought you could use a first round pick on a punter/kicker is inexcusable. The Raiders were a great football team and had that luxury. The Saints weren’t close to that.

Has to be Shawn Knight. Did he even play a down?
Sully, Molten, and RE sucked, and was over drafted but played a decent amount.
Turner is on the list.
