I think they still serve a viable purpose. They’ve got about 2400 students and it’s very affordable. Most leave with little to no debt. If they’ve got your degree and you aren’t in to partying then it’s probably a solid option. Many of the people I’ve know over the years that go there live in Starkville for the after class experience and drive the 20 minutes to Columbus to get a degree on the cheap. Buying up the blight east of campus might help them almost as much as a name change. As others have said, Magnolia State University is the way to go but I get the impression many want to keep the letter W in there somewhere.

Magnolia State University
College and university are technically different kinds of schools and if they already identify as a university I'm not sure why they'd change it to college.

They need to stop trying to become something they're not.

Mississippi Atheneum
Why not set yourselves apart if you're really going for a revamp in image and something unique?
atheneum
1: a building or room in which books, periodicals, and newspapers are kept for use
2: a literary or scientific association
Athena is the root of the word and where it derives it's meaning, so the association with it's historical female/feminine roots is still in the name of the university. It works on multiple levels
That or Magnolia State University would be my two choices

2400?
Jeez, there a lot of high schools with bigger enrollment than that. Dutchtown, for one.
Shut it down.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) — Mississippi University for Women plans to change its name to Wynbridge State University of Mississippi.
The university made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.
Wynbridge has no historical meaning for the university. “Wyn” comes from the Old English word for “W” and “bridge” is symbolic of the bridging between the past and future.
MUW is also known as “The W.” The letter comes from the word “women.”
