They got lost.

Lee says she shipped Deontray’s boxed ashes along with some gifts from a UPS store in Hiram, Georgia, to her sister’s address in Connecticut in early January. The package was supposed to arrive by Jan. 10.

Did the box have one of these labels?

I'm sure the porch pirates gave Deontay a proper send off.

I'll bet she didn't identify the package as remains.
It's actually a bit of a process to legally ship ashes.

When you ship something, you know there is a risk it will get lost.

His remains are now unaccounted for after she tried shipping them to her sister, who was making a custom cremation urn.
So the plan was to send the ashes to her sister to make a custom urn, then the sister would return the urn with the ashes so they could

Will never cease to amaze me that people will use cheap service for an important package.

Did she use the Montrose CO funeral home for services?
Wasn’t Deontray anyways.

She probably tried to save money by not properly declaring and labeling it and...well.
Guess Deontray is ashy now

As a former UPS employee back in college…. Yea….. don’t ship anything you hold dear and that is irreplaceable via ANY parcel shipping service.
If people only knew.

I am pretty sure it is illegal to ship remains by any method other than the USPS. I had to do it last year.

I am convinced my wife and her brother have lost their mothers remains. She and I had them in Italy just after her death and at some point she gave them to her brother, she claims. He claims she still has them. They do not know, as far as I know, that the other one has no idea where they are and thinks the other one has them somewhere. I have casually asked both of them - to my wife "did you ever give your mom's urn to your brother"? She will answer yes.
I have asked my BIL "have y'all ever done anything with your mom's ashes" to which he will respond "not yet, (My wife's name) has them". Neither of them have ever asked the other and it ain't my place to whack a hornets nest.
I'm going to be cremated and I don't give a damn what anyone does with my remains but I have asked that they do it immediately before they forget and some old boy buys a storage unit at auction and finds the damned things....just dump 'em anywhere, what do I care, but don't put some poor bastard in a position to have to deal with them.

Only way to ship cremated remains is through USPS, if UPS discovered what it was they probably confiscated it.
