Earhart’s plane disappeared over the Pacific in 1937 as she sought to become the first woman to fly around the world. Ever since then, mystery has surrounded the American aviator’s fate amid intense speculation as to what happened to her.

But Tony Romeo, a pilot and former US air force intelligence officer, told the Wall Street Journal on Friday he may have solved the mystery after he collected a sonar image of what could be an aircraft as part of his quest to find Earhart’s plane.

A sonar image shows what could be the plane that disappeared during Amelia Earhart's final flight in 1937.

Romeo, a South Carolina real estate investor who sold his business to fund his search for Earhart’s plane wreckage, posted the images on Instagram. The images show a blurry mass that could – just about – be seen as being plane-shaped. He told the Journal he would now try and get better images.

quote:

His team reviewed sonar data in December caught by an underwater drone from his research voyage and found a startling image: a blurry, plane-like shape Romeo believes is Earhart's twin engine Lockheed 10-E Electra.

The image was taken about 100 miles from Howland Island, halfway between Australia and Hawaii. Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, were expected to land there in July 1937 for a refueling stop in her bid to be the first female pilot to circumnavigate the globe — but they never made it.

Google Maps doesn't think much of ol' Howland Island.

I thought it was Nikumaroro, wonder how far the two areas are from each other

quote:

In 2018, a forensic analysis of bones found on the remote Pacific island of Nikumaroro strongly suggested they belonged to Earhart. The bones had been found in 1940 yet initially assumed to be male. But a new analysis of the results from the remains – the bones themselves having disappeared – suggested their measurements were female and similar to what would have been expected if they belonged to Earhart.

If there had been a man relaxing on a sofa there then you damn well better believe she’d have made it so she could disturb him.

It looks like the plane in the sonar image has wings that are more swept back than her plane?

That’s a pretty damn clear sonar image provided it’s real.

Apparently, this object is 16,500 feet deep. For reference, the titanic wreckage is ~12,500… so, we’ll probably never find out?

If that is, in fact, Amelia Earhart’s plane….

I hope she is ok.

That is a horrible sonar image!! Our Kongsberg sonars 20yrs ago gave us better images than that.

Yes, it is a plane, but how many military planes went down in that area in WW2? This dude is just trying to build up hype to get a tv deal to recoup some of the millions he’s spent looking for it.

If they really think it is her plane, they’d have dropped an ROV in the water, and gotten eyes on it. Which they probably did, but are waiting for the media to blow it up, and bid out tv contracts.

What a joke….

How were they supposed to land, refuel, and take off again from an uninhabited island with no airstrip? And no refueling station?
