It's real simple.
The true cost of solar panels exceed the lifetime savings on your electric bill.
They're only a good deal if someone else pays for them.

this x100

i set in on a sales pitch a number of years ago with my parent on someone selling their house. I ran the numbers and without the credits, the lifetime payback did not cover the non-subsidized cost of the install. When concronted, the sales person admitted that was the case.

Beyond that, many of them were poorly, improperly installed which is causing leaks and roof damage. Doesn't take much to wipe out the ROI when you have to hire someone to remove the PV installation, repair the roof, then reinstall the PV panels properly to code. Solar panels themselves are not an inspectable item for a home inspector but the roof penetrations are and many buyers see them as a liability now.

It's almost like they are too good to be true.

If you use one of those rip-off companies that have huge commissions on top of everything else.
I’ve ordered and installed my own equipment. It should pay for itself in about 7 years. On top of that I have another available power source during power outages. And the ability to disconnect from the grid if I ever needed to.

So there are definitely other benefits from Solar besides its ability to pay for itself over time.

Or if you live off grid with a small electrical energy footprint in a place with a lot of sunshine.

We asked our real estate agent about this. Her exact words, "if you ever plan on selling this place, not a good investment".

This. And utility companies wised up real fast on how they were getting screwed with the commissions forcing a 1:1 kWh offset. Meaning utilities were forced to pay the customer the same amount for each kWh generated and put back into the grid as the kWh consumed from the electric grid. This makes no sense as a utility price per kWh includes things like O&M, capital spend with interest, forestry costs, etc. now everyone is switching to the model where utilities can charge regular rates for kWh delivered and the customer is paid for kWh generated at a wholesale price. That’s the way it should have been all along and it’s pissing solar installers off because it makes the panel price offset near impossible to achieve.

Solar panels are on of those things where we just need to wait for the tech to evolve further.
Tesla is working on the literal roof itself being the solar panel. It will take time. Let the rich folks and corporate America be the early adopters.
