Then the only alternative I’ll accept is reducing the homestead exemption to the first $25,000 and reducing the income tax by whatever that net gain is.
Take that extra $50,000 from everybody and include more of the less fortunate so they will understand the effects of always voting for property tax they never pay and the costs of government for which they are generally net takers.

How about a 20% local sales tax and double property taxes?

Isn't he also talking about giving some kind of credit for private school tuition?

The only way to replace it is sales tax and/or property tax...and we already have a high sales tax.

You mean the highest homestead exemption in the country?
I guess keeping all our local public school funding and local infrastructure funding centralized in Baton Rouge is better. That way, those needs are highly dependent on the annual prostitution fest…I mean legislative session.

Do you support a phasing out of the income tax?

Any studies out there comparing who ends up paying the taxes in a state with income tax vs property taxes/sales tax?
I've always been interested in that. Face value it does seem like it was transfer to the upper middle and above

I disagree. Property taxes are the worst.
You have to pay rent to the state for property you already own.

Dept of Education are both known as a bastions of excellent work product and efficiency.
You can add local school districts to this too.
I was looking at a directory of a local school district and was amazed at how many head of x, y, and z departments or programs they had for each federal program or state grant.
Some were former teachers that could be in the classroom but were enticed to a new central office position since they got a grant for it and a pay raise.
That could be a lot of fat to cut out of government. I even learned this year that for migrants they are eligible for free uniforms and other school supplies. But if you are a regular citizen, you don’t qualify.

Which is way better than taxing (and thus penalizing) productivity. Not to mention an income tax over a local property tax means more and more centralized power for the state government.
You libs are so easy to spot.

Increased property taxes, sales taxes, increased fees and permits for this and that.. some will be state and some will be local.
I don’t mind increased sales tax. Everyone who buys something will contribute rather than roughly half who don’t pay any income taxes. An increase in sales tax won’t come close to impacting me like income taxes do. I can’t begin to explain my hatred towards paying income taxes when there is very little perceived return on the investment.

frick that. When you can explain to me what the state did to earn a portion of the paycheck that I worked for, then we can talk about an income tax.
So if by some miracle they would eliminate the state income tax in Louisiana, they’re gonna have to get it elsewhere and it seems like most other states do that by having very high property taxes.
Personally, I’d probably prefer a higher state sales tax so everyone pays taxes and not just the people who have good jobs and own property.

My state and local tax burden in texas is a helluva lot less than it would be to Louisiana.
I’d love to do a comparison of a family with same number of kids, same income and same home values in TX and LA and see who pays more taxes to the state.

That’s why a sales tax is more fair. Everyone pays.
