He lost 50% of his first signing class after one season.

Ward should be starting or playing 25+ minutes per game.
He's playing 19 now. And while I would be incline to agree with you, the concern is he is a liability on defense. Really only just ahead of Baker and Cook. Plus, he's a bit of a one-trick pony right now with his 3 point shooting. Cook, Wright and Williams have a bit more all-around production...with Wright and Williams being two of your best defenders.
The question then becomes how much defense are you willing to give up for the added shooting? 20-25 MP sounds reasonable.

It is to rebuild the team from the crater he found it in and then sustain a winning program.
So you are expecting him to match Wade's record?
Dream big.

quote:There is nothing vague about it. He has to rebuild the program from the huge gaping hole it was in when he got here. By next year I expect it will be back at the .500 SEC record that the former guy had as at before he was fired. After that we should finish in the top half of the league which is a pretty automatic NCAA bid.
Pretty vague and mailable no? I’ll ask again, is he expected to win 19-22 games 80% of the time like Jones or is it NCAA tourney every year like Brown and Wade or is it up and down results with a couple of deep runs like Brady? What’s a winning program in your view?

And yeah cook is in a slump.

You still haven’t defined what a winning program is to you which is why I said vague and you’re refusing to clarify that. Getting to .500 in year 3 isn’t good and top half of the SEC is going backwards from where we’ve been the previous 5 seasons before him. So again is Johnny Jones the standard because that’s what you’re describing?

You’re not giving anything up by starting him. Our D is good because of our length stopping shots in the paint. We get steals because nobody is going inside on us and our wings can jump passing lanes without fear. What’s hurting us is our offense and Ward gives you several things there. His shooting would take a lot of the help away from Cook and Wright t give them more space, he’s a very good passer, doesn’t turn the ball over at all and his length would provide some matchup issue against Wright. Who do you put your 2 man on, the 6-6 Wright or the 6-6 Ward? You’d also have Williams, who’s a natural PG, fresh to spell Cook and give your second unit a boost.

quote:Your ridiculous opinion. The SEC is a tough league. You can't just go from absolute zero to middle of the league in 1 or 2 years. And don't give me your nonsense about the transfer portal. Last I checked every coach has access to the same transfer portal.

quote:So I guess the last guy had us going backwards? Good to see you admit that.
and top half of the SEC is going backwards from where we’ve been the previous 5 seasons before him.
And for the record, getting to .500 when your program was zeroed out is moving forward.

The program's ultimate goal should ALWAYS be to compete for national championships. Now, that's not to say that should be the expectation for this year, or even next. But that is the standard every coach should be judged by....are we progressing towards that ultimate goal? If not, are we just wasting our time in the current state?
Even at his best I never thought Jones was a coach that could progress the program to that goal. That's why I thought from day 1 the Jones tenure was going to be as waste of time. While not a terrible first 5 years by any means, LSU wasn't ever on any path to win big. That was confirmed when the Simmons season was a complete bust after so much build up.
Wade wasn't there yet either. But there were at least glimmers of hope the program could possibly get there under him. That hope coming from the fact he was recruiting at a high level (the 2022-2023 class was on pace to be one of, if not his best at LSU before he was fired). He delivered one of the best regular seasons in nearly 40 years in just his second season on the job. Most notably (but for 2020) he would have led LSU to the most consecutive NCAAT appearances in a long time,
McMahon wasn't going to compete for anything big last season. Everyone knew that. But the results were far worse than any reasonable person expected. This season didn't look to be too much better until 2.5 weeks ago. Now there is a bit of hope. Is that just early season fools goal? Or is it something real? We'll find out over the next 2 months.
I think just a few more SEC wins guarantees McMahon's return for next season. But at the end of this season my thought process will be: "is LSU trending to be comparable to programs such as Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, etc...ALL programs who, with the right HC, LSU could very much be equal to? Or is the program trending more towards Vanderbilt, Georgia, South Carolina level? Programs that can have some marginal success here and there, but never consistently sustain it. If it looks more like the latter then the argument can start to be made that LSU is wasting their time with McMahon because they are unlikely to become a great program under him. And if you feel the likelihood of LSU ever becoming great under McMahon is low, then why continue to spin your wheels? And I say that as someone who WANTS to see McMahon succeed. My self-worth is not tied into winning a message board debate re: McMahon vs. Wade.

If you eventually don’t start being objective instead of spinning everything to make excuses for McMahon you’ll end up being the next chinhoyang.

McMahon just hates collins I guess
I've been wondering the same thing until McMahon finally said on Friday that Collins is still rehabbing from a dislocated shoulder suffered around Thanksgiving time. I'm guessing its probably one of those that really needs surgery but are instead trying to strengthen it and stabilize it for the remainder of the season. He gave it a go a couple times since but not ready yet and is still day to day.
Unfortunate because I think he could give a solid 10-12 minutes at the 4 and 5 to provide some really athletic play, sort of opposite of what you get with Baker.

True. Auburn has consistently looked the best of any SEC team this year, and yet LSU went to their place and wasn't embarrassed.
Last year LSU was blown out by Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, A&M, Florida, Miss St... heck they even were blown at at home by SOUTH CAROLINA!!

Why don't you answer your own questions? What do you think is a good season this year? What do you think expectations should be for next year?

You’re just proving my point when you make the choice to dismiss any and all universal comparisons like talent rankings and production. What’s even more telling is that you don’t judge any other team that way and wouldn’t even be able to make judgments of anybody or any team. Again this points to your refusal to do anything except spin everything a certain way. And BTW I have stated my expectation which is much lower than it would be if we had someone other than your dad. You however still haven’t clarified yours or answered the very simple question I asked. Another dead giveaway you’ll do anything to avoid objectivity on this topic.

That is truly pathetic.

I love Tyrell but Mike is just the better player. Ward will be starting next year.
On a different note, to answer someone's question about the HS signees, I think Curtis Givens is really fricking good. I was blown away by his signing. I think Robert Miller is good but all the tape I've seen of him he seems to be barely trying against worse competition. I think he might be better than Reed off rip tho. (Not like that's saying a whole lot)

Expectations should be to be in the NCAAT every season because that’s what our previous coach was doing.

Oh no you can’t say that. The new standard is slightly better than Trent Johnson overall but without the highs of winning the SEC. Thats the new standard set by certain fans.
