I think some are using the terms goals and expectations interchangeably when they are, in fact, different. The goals should always be, at minimum, to reach the NCAAT. But yearly expectations often fluctuate. Last year the goal was to at least make the NCAAT. But a reasonable expectation wasn't that high because of the significant turnover in the program. This year the goal again is to at least make the NCAAT. But the expectation isn't that high. Largely because of last year's performance. The expectation is (or at least should be) to be markedly better than last year. Until (almost) 3 weeks ago the program wasn't reaching those expectations. At the moment it seems to be trending in that direction (but there is still a long way to go).

Next season the goals will remain the same as they have been. It's the expectations that will change. It will be year 3. So while 6-8 SEC wins this season will likely satisfy expectations, the expectations next year will be higher (or at least they should be). So while 6-8 SEC wins this year may be just good enough, that won't be the case next season because expectations will be higher.

Johnson vastly exceeded expectations in year 1. Then fell significantly short of reasonable expectations in the following year. Jones exceeded expectations in year 1 (even though it was only a .500 SEC record). As the reasonable expectations got bigger the results failed to meet them.

Wade exceeded expectations in year 1. He vastly exceeded them in year 2. In years 3 and 4 he probably met the new expectation level, but didn't necessarily exceed them. In year 5 he somewhat underachieved (regular season). But he had enough goodwill in the bank that people were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt year 6 could/would be better.

McMahon doesn't have that goodwill/benefit of the doubt yet. He lost all of it with last year's performance. So if we get through year 3 and LSU is still a bottom 1/2 of the SEC program there won't be anything to look back on and give you confidence he can improve that standing.

McMahon wasn't going to compete for anything big last season. Everyone knew that. But the results were far worse than any reasonable person expected. This season didn't look to be too much better until 2.5 weeks ago. Now there is a bit of hope. Is that just early season fools goal? Or is it something real? We'll find out over the next 2 months.

This is spot on exactly my observation.

The first year was a total and complete failure, and I've heard all the rationalizations and I agree with none of them. We did not have great talent but we even underachieved with what we had and no signs of improvement or development - hell we got worse as the year went on.

And I think you're spot on about this year as well, until about 2.5 weeks ago, this year looked ALOT like last year.

And it's more than the Cook addition, there have been other signs that give me some hope, and I want to hope, I want CMM to succeed. And I do hope we build on those.

What idiot on the face of this planet would have us as a bubble team? I love LSU basketball with every breath in my being and as a season ticket holder, booster and major supporter that knows the previous regime left us in the worst situation possible we’re at least a year away from any postseason play.

Keep the faith brother. McMahon can coach and recruit. He doesn’t have to pay to win. He’s gonna take us on some deep runs given time.

Last year was absolutely abysmal. But McMahon was dealt the worst cards ever. Completely had to gut the entire roster with pending sanctions hanging over the program. We might have had a little bit of stability had Wade chosen to speak up and man up and let LSU know what players he paid or didn’t. But we definitely regressed one way or the other.

That being said we’ve made progress this year so far but we’re facing an absolute gauntlet in the next 8 games. And we’re gonna lose to some really good teams. Just stay the course and keep the faith. McMahon will win in due time

The lionup, I mean the lineup will see a half court press lineup change this week. Stew, hann will get more time while baker and fountain will be interchangeable picking and rolling to the free throw line. Wait you thought I was gonna say to out rebounding the other team? Naw that’s Reed, Dean, Hannibal.

Tigers upset UG

We certainly underachieved. No doubt about it. And I certainly thought he should’ve given the younger players more minutes. 6 sec wins this year is the ceiling imho. Next year hopefully 9 and an NIT bid. McMahon in my opinion certainly gets the benefit of the doubt and a 3 year pass considering how badly Wade absolutely f***** us and the cloud he left over our program. Ain’t no elite player, hs or portal in their right mind would even consider playing for LSU

I'll say this cmcat....I'm a season ticket holder and I go to every game. CMM is a good guy and I want him to succeed, I've said that repeatedly.

There is a tendency on forums like these to want to be right, to say I told you so - so much so that at times our opinions being right become more important to us than even the success of our team or worse at the expense of our team...that's not the case with me here.

Having said all that I was very concerned about the direction of the program up until very recently and still am some, but FINALLY, and I do mean FINALLY about 3 weeks ago we started showing some improvements both individually and collectively that I had seen frankly, none of before then.

So therein lies the glimmer of hope I've been waiting to lock onto, I hope it continues and grows and I hope you are the one who is right here.

I don't quite have the certainty that CMM will be the man that you do - but I would be thrilled if your faith is rewarded.
