Going on a week long trip to Phoenix, Sedona, and Grand Canyon with pre teen kids. Looking for suggestions of things to see and do.

Following.....

Honestly have built up a nice list of hikes etc by some of the reels/IG accounts they have out there.

Moreso focused on the Sedona/Grand Canyon area.

Look there, or if they are preteen then def can get them involved and excited if they chip in that way

We are doing a similar trip in May, no kids.

We are getting an airbnb in uptown Sedona with a nice view and hottub. Wine country is nearby so we are doing a day trip for that.

Our plan currently is to take the train from the Sedona area right into the grand canyon as a novelty type of thing.

We are only staying one night in the GC, taking the train back.

I assume you have your accommodations already if staying in the park?

There are limited options that are expensive and go very fast.

When I went to GCNP (almost 20 years now) I stayed in Williams (due south of Grand Canyon Village/main entrance for the south rim), and about an hour drive from Sedona. Williams sits on old Route 66 and has several blocks that are restored to what it would have looked like in the 50s/60s. Williams is also the home base for the Grand Canyon Railway. It's not cheap ($35-$100/adult; $18-$95/kid depending on opulence of car choice) and you don't get as long in the park (about 3.5 hours) as if you drove but still a train ride through that area could be fun.

These next couple of suggestions are a bit out of the way from Sedona/Phoenix, but I'll mention them because they are in the greater general area. If you are an Eagles fan, Sedona is about 90 minutes from Winslow, Arizona. There is a small park there that commemorates the song Take It Easy, with a statue of a guy with a guitar standing on a corner.

From Winslow it is about a 45 minute drive east on I-40 to Petrified Forest National Park. It is a cool park and doesn't take super long to see. Heading east from Winslow you get off at one exit from I-40, go through the park and get back on 40 about 25 miles east of where you got off.

We did this exact trip a few years ago.

If you are there in the summer hit up Slide Rock Park. Kids will love it.

Pink jeep tour in Sedona was a hit as well as Devil's Bridge.

We stayed at Fairmont Princess in Scottsdale. It was nice.

El Tovar at the GC is a dump but location, location, location.

Stayed at Enchanment in Sedona.....highly recommend. Have been twice.

I'd consider stopping into Jerome on the way to Sedona or on the way back to Phoenix. Also, you can hit Montezuma's Castle. Old Native American dwellings in cliffs. Super cool.

Plenty of great hikes in and around Sedona. Cathedral Rock is probably my favorite. Fay Canyon, and Boynton Canyon are also really cool hikes. And has been mentioned, Devil's Bridge.

I highly recommend the West Fork Trail in Oak Creek Canyon on the way to or from Grand Canyon. Stunning hike.

The drive up 89A from Sedona to Flagstaff is one of my favorite drives ever. The change from desert red rock to higher elevation lush green forest is incredible. It ends at a series of switchbacks that take you up 2,000 or so feet south of Flagstaff. Y'all are in for a treat.

Here’s a post I posted from another thread:

I highly recommend 2 days at the canyon and 2-3 days in Sedona. Unless you want to take the trip into the canyon and raft on the rivers, which will add a 3rd day to the canyon.

We did this trip. Flew to Phoenix to make a road trip out of it. One of my favorite trips. Book Grand Canyon hotels months in advance. Watch YouTube videos about the canyon to learn what to do.

We did canyon first because the sedona to Phoenix drive was shorter. I figured a shorter drive to catch a flight home was smarter.

Flying to Flagstaff makes sense but we chose the easier route of Phoenix.

We went in April and you’ll see snow in flagstaff and maybe a little at the canyon.

2 days in the canyon works fine. 3 days in Sedona is ideal to fit a lot in, but you can make it 2 days if needed. You’ll need 3 days to travel. 7 or 8 days total.

Day 1 - fly to Phoenix. Rent car and drive to Grand Canyon (via Williams). Stop at Cave Creek Park to see cactus.

Day 2 - explore canyon until lunch. Bearizona (We loved it) in Williams then explore Williams and dinner.

Day 3 - canyon sights

Day 4 - drive to Sedona. Stop at Sunset Crater for 1 hour.

Day 5 - sedona Jeep rental from Make Your Expedition (get it for a full day or longer). Spend the whole day driving the trails. MUST DO. You’ll skip all the walking while hiking and drive the trails instead. Let the kids drive.

Day 6 - Sedona short hiking, horseback ride, shopping. There’s a cowboy Chuck wagon dinner show just west of sedona. We rode horses there but they didn’t do the show because of covid.

Day 7 - Montezuma Castle in the morning and Jerome for lunch. Relaxing evening in Sedona. You can skip this but if you have time, it adds so much value to the trip.

Day 8 - drive to Phoenix and fly home. Eat at In N Out burger in Phoenix for fun.

We've done something similar to this and we are going back in April.

We flew into PHX and rented a car. You get you fill of the awesome cactus views on the drive to Sedona.

Sedona:

A ton of great hikes. Devils Bridge, Boynton Canyon, Cathedral Rock, West Fork are all amazing.

Jeep Tours are worth it to get off your feet for a while.

Seeing some of the native sites could fill an afternoon as well. Go see the Chapel of the Holy Cross, and slide rock park.

Food is easy to come by.

GC:

Take 89A to GC and start in the morning. Stop in Flagstaff for some breakfast.

Honestly, a lot of people will tell you to spend days at the Grand Canyon. I think that would be really awesome, but it depends how much you want to see. I would like to do that one day, but havent had time.

We drove thr rim, made all the stops and did a small hike. Didnt spend the night. We drove straight to Page.

Page:

Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell are there. If youre feeling reaaaally squirrelly, you could probably make it to Monument Valley from there. We drove to Brce Canyon (a pretty long drive) from Page.

From here, we spent a day in Bryce and 2.5 days in Zion before ending in Vegas.

8 nights. If you need any help or info, just reply and I'll send you my email.

All of these suggestions have been great and very helpful. Does anyone have any specific recommendations in Phoenix?

I recommend the Desert Botanical Garden, and Papago Park. They are right beside each other, and both are very cool.

If you are looking for more a challenge, hike up Camelback Mountain. It'll kick your butt but if you like hiking/climbing up things then you'll love it. Great views from the top.
