Not sure you want to lump Spelman in with the Southern’s and Geamblings of the world. It is a different animal.

This. It’s Spelman and Howard in a class by themselves. Then all the other HBCUs in a completely different class.

Gosh, I always thought that was a fictional college from the Cosby Show.

The more you know.

Why the comparison?

LSU is over 15 times the size of Spelman, yet the largest donation to LSU is slightly more than double of this Spelman donation.

Im an oldhead, so every time i see ‘Spelman College’, i always think it’s the name of the fictional university on the Cosby Show and A Different World that Denise Huxtable attended .. i think maybe im thinking of Hillman College, but im too lazy to look it up .

Same. I just looked it up and it was in fact “Hillman”

Two, the quality of students these schools are getting tend to be godawful

When black students used to be turned away from white schools in large numbers, these schools had good students to pull from.
Yeah, if you’re a highly intelligent and accomplished black student, your arse is going to any Ivy League school you want, not some HBCU.

LSU was given the biggest donation in school history of $245 million dollars from Our Lady of The Lake and LCMC Health

This is more hilarious because the way they operate and pay employees they act like they are fookin broke.

It would be ANY high end school, not just an Ivy.

My old boss’s kid got a full ride to Tulane because he was black and had a high ACT. I think the same thing happened when he went for his law degree, as I want to say UCLA gave him either a full ride or a very generous scholarship.

If you are going to a HBCU, you tend to be either very committed to it for political reasons or you don’t have many other opportunities.

You are using faulty logic…. I know many white people who prefer to be around ‘their own kind’.. So if a black person decides to attend an HBCU, a de facto choice to be ‘around their own kind’- then to you that means it’s political ??

Main difference here? The vast majority of HBCUs are at the bottom tier of available universities.

Spelman and Howard may be highly regarded but any MEAC or SWAC school has a shite reputation.

Jackson State sucks so bad that, rather than fix it, the state of Mississippi lowered the admission standards of all other colleges in the state by law to allow equal access.

Someone I know used to be the head trainer at Mississippi Valley St and couldn’t get good help because the benefits of working there (free tuition to a grad program) didn’t offer anything useful to the kind of people he wanted to hire, as the programs offered were shite.

Etc.

This isn’t directly a race thing as much as a quality thing. If you are going to a lot of these schools, you are going somewhere well below what is called a “third tier toilet.”

So why do we need special colleges? They aren’t special. I can imagine what would happen if others tried to do the same.

theres a wide gap between Jackson state material and Harvard material

Even a black girl isn’t getting into an Ivy with a 31 on the ACT/whatever the SAT equivalent is.

Maybe not an Ivy but certainly getting courted by the next tier down like a Vandy or Tulane.

Spelman is ranked significantly higher than LSU in every single metric available.

Imagine having the wealth to donate $100M and giving it to a college instead of to St Jude’s or something similar which provides real help to real people who are hurting.

LMAO....her company, Stryker, is one of the world's leading medical device and product companies investing 100s of millions of dollars each year into helping hurting people. If you've ever had a medical procedure then she helped you. She also donates $50+ million each year to her community through about 100 different organizations. She's a good person....no reason to shite on her.
