ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - On Thursday, Spelman College announced a “historic” $100 million donation from a billionaire businesswoman and school trustee.
The gift is the largest single donation ever given to a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) school. It also comes as the school marks 100 years since its official naming in 1924, the college said in a news release.
$75 million will go toward endowed scholarships for students, school leaders said. The other $25 million will be used to improve student housing, develop academics for public policy and democracy, and to “provide flexible funding” for other needs.

The donation comes from Ronda Stryker, who directs her family’s medical equipment manufacturing company, and her husband William Johnston, the chairman of wealth management firm Greenleaf Trust.
Stryker has been a Spelman College trustee since 1997.

BATON ROUGE - LSU was given the biggest donation in school history of $245 million dollars from Our Lady of The Lake and LCMC Health. "This gift is a game changer," LSU President Dr. William Tate said Friday morning.
Spelman College has a total undergraduate enrollment of 2,374
Louisiana State University/Total enrollment 37,354

Uber rich white woman obsessed with diversity cred makes vain charitable donation.
If HBCU's were run well this wouldn't be bad, but less than 20% of all HBCU admits eventually graduate.
More afrochemistry students .

What a waste.
If you wanna donate family money, cool.
At least donate to a real school.

Imagine having the wealth to donate $100M and giving it to a college instead of to St Jude’s or something similar which provides real help to real people who are hurting.

But what about the headlines?
The new currency among trust fund/heir white women is social justice.
MacKenzie Scott Bezos donating to LGBTQ
Melinda Gates donating to abortion causes
Abigail Disney donating to progressive groups
This woman
Cancer research isn't splashy enough for these women. It's not as popular at the celebrity cocktail hours in the Hamptons over the summer.

Spelman College
Just fired a professor for refusing to (even further) inflate students' grades.
He had already scaled up their grades and something like 44% would still fail (it was around 80% before his own bump, if I recall), so they told him to bump them even higher. He refused, so they raised the students' grades anyway, and fired him.
Nothing like producing a bunch of worthless turds with a sense of entitlement and a belief they don't have to earn anything. This is one of the early stepping stones that leads to Fani Willis-type "I can't be held accountable for anything" behavior.

Im an oldhead, so every time i see ‘Spelman College’, i always think it’s the name of the fictional university on the Cosby Show and A Different World that Denise Huxtable attended .. i think maybe im thinking of Hillman College, but im too lazy to look it up .

What's the big controversy here? She has been on the Spelman Board Of Trustees for over 26 years, and it's her company's money.
You people are so easily manipulated into anger. Who actually cares about this, except Spelman.

Not sure you want to lump Spelman in with the Southern’s and Geamblings of the world. It is a different animal.

Lotta blame to go around here.
One, administration at these schools fricking suck.
Two, the quality of students these schools are getting tend to be godawful
When black students used to be turned away from white schools in large numbers, these schools had good students to pull from.
These days? Most HBCUs have pretty much open enrollment to get as many bodies in the door as possible. As long as they qualify for the government loans or can pay tuition, they’re in.
It is a case of most of these schools no longer fitting any need but trying to stick around to keep the gravy train running.
Contrast this with, say, women’s only colleges. A number of them have either started enrolling men or have shut down completely for a variety of reasons. (Some of it is lack of enrollment but others, like Sweetbriar in Virginia, got closed because the real estate was more valuable than the school)

Ask most large companies about the kinds of graduates they were getting from the likes of Howard U, which is considered one of the high end HBCUs.
They tended to get people who would come in with a chip on their shoulder documenting micro aggressions in order to set up a discrimination case.

Some of you frick knuckles bitch about HBCUs solely because of black in the name. You do know that Spelman College is the number one ranked hbcu in the country, right? Nationally, it has a much higher ranking than LSU.
