If Raymond and Baker watch any film at all Burns wont be on the field

I'm not sure I'd say that about any of our defensive players last year. Sure there are/were talents issues, but good coaching can help anyone move forward if they are willing to put in work.

I'm with you here. I'm excited to see what he's capable of with better coaching.

If Sage and toviano can actually play safety I think they'll be good. Major burns is a solid in the box safety. he will make tackles. He's no a cover guy

Sage definitely got better last year as the season went on. He didn’t play his freshman year when Raymond was here, so he was always a development project. I think the key with Burns will be having more depth at safety and being able to use him in a limited role like putting him in the box. He’s pretty bad at a lot of things, so having a better secondary in general will make things easier for him. Since Gilbert’s strong suit is coverage, I’m interested to see if he can tie in the back end of the defense. I feel like a true center field safety is essential to a defense.

I am pumped about the defense...just need to figure out the defensive line...I think the DB's will do better when the opponent's QB has some pressure on him.

He was ok. I think his best spot is nickel. Not really seeing him as a safety as a lotta people do.

Never seen anyone like it, got to the point during the season that my wife and I would just look at each other and laugh each time Burns did whatever it is he thought he was doing. And yes, if your gonna sport the neck roll at safety then you gotta at least make a few plays now and then.

I agree. A safety really needs to be a hitter.

Burns just seems slow and passive. Not sure what the deal is.

He is not slow. A couple of years ago he ran down the speedster on a long run to prevent a TD. He has speed. He has problems with getting out of position. His mistakes are more mental than physical. And he has had his share of them.

I’ll wait for Jimmy to confirm

I tend to agree but a Damone Clark type turnaround is always possible. Especially with excellent coaching with I believe we have now.
I mean it was night & day with DC, now he’s in the league, you just never know!

IMO, neither Sage Ryan nor Major Burns is SEC caliber starter material. Neither is great in pass coverage and as sure as hell can't tackle worth a damn. Burns I believe does lead the team in tackles but most of that is because so many passes are caught by the receiver he is covering or 2nd chance tackles on the play where he missed the initial stop. On a lot of teams, these players would be "spell" players to give breathers to the real starters. Also, Greg Brooks' loss isn't mentioned nearly enough. He clearly was the best player in the entire LSU secondary until that unfortunate brain tumor discovery.

Baker has his work cut out for the team and these two. Burns can't cover or tackle. Sage can't tackle or track a ball in the air. 3 years in and still yet to turn his head toward the QB to look for when the balls arriving.

All season players were out of position and confused with scheme and coverages. If Baker can get everyone on the same page where players know what they're supposed to be doing and where they're supposed to be the defense will be significantly better regardless of talent. They'll tackle better too because if you are in position you aren't chasing and having to dive at players.
