Need more details. How long have you been with the firm? If this isn’t your first busy season then your resume will look great to private companies. I used head hunters to look around for me. Also, if close to promotion, wait until that is over and then look. If it’s wearing on you mentally then just cash in your effort if you want. They’ll still get the work done and issue the clients letters or returns by May.

I can’t speak for Lafayette, but I’m sure others on here can. A lot of them are national and place jobs in any market.
It’s one of the best kept secrets out there people don’t do.
Most get paid by companies and are free to the consumer. You tell them exactly what you want and they do all the work for you.

I have but I have retirement pay and 100% va disability so I’m different but I have had a close friend in your boat, a lawyer, and he did that exact thing. It took him a while to find a new gig but he had to for his own mental health. It worked out in the end for him but he isn’t even a lawyer anymore. He writes, copies and proofreads manuals and stuff like that.

I have drug up MANY times without having another job lined up BUT only when I was willing to take a referral from another local somewhere in the country. If I was stuck in life without a ticket I would not do it. I would think now would be a perfect time for a CPA to find a new gig...

My only exposure to these kinds of people is who my company hires to recruit and they're a fairly large, non-specific company.

Contact a recruiter. Get out of public accounting. Best decision I ever made. Carrie Lewis at Robert Half is a good place to start.

yeah, but this is fricked. i travel almost every week and we have a baby on the way and my wife definitely wants me to quit my job. but financially, that is a horrific idea for us.
im looking for another job, but it's not magic. i also can't fully leverage any network i have because my current boss is local and we know a lot of the same people. he knows im exploring other opportunities within the company, but i like the company and the team and really dont want to burn all bridges if i leave.
just seems like you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

It is always easier to find another job when you are currently employed. There are way too many questions about why you aren't working.
Start sending out resumes and at least figure out what kind of job you want. Why isn't this working? Accounting is always a job that required some OT, but industry isn't the same as public. Why don't they want to keep you? An employer that really wants you may be flexible. It's only a few months till busy season is over. You can't suck it up for a little while? 50 hours per week isn't really a lot, either. I would have thought it was at least 60. In my regular CFO job, there are plenty of 50 hour weeks and generally people don't find that to be a lot.
BTW, I'm a CFO with 40 years accounting experience and my CPA. I was in public for just a few years. It sounds to me like you have more to figure out than just a new job.
