If you’re trying to make a lateral move, what firm has time to interview during tax season?
Posted on 1/17/24 at 4:49 pm to cbree88
Yep
Took a very, very nice voluntary severance package at the age of 52 and did not have a job in hand.
Three things played into that.
1. I had faith that God would guide my path forward.
2. I had full support of my spouse that I would find work sooner than later, and I did.
3. I was 100% burned out with my current job/employer.
Leaving after 30 years saved my sanity and ended up being a huge windfall on the $$ side.
Thank you "spouse" and God for supporting my decision.

So by your logic we should stop working? Stop bending over. Take a stance. Don’t worry about the bills when they pile up, don’t worry about the debt, send our kids to public schools, collect welfare and government assistance. Start robbing to make ends meet. Blame it on my surroundings. Finish off life in jail. Think I’ll just work hard for my family, and be “the problem”.
Huh ? Point out where i said, or implied , not to work hard… Again, you are proving my point if you dont think that the person who works 50 hours per week is working hard…. Unless im missing ur point, it sounds like your point is that one needs to work well over 50 hours per week to be considered ‘hard working ‘.. fwiw i know many baws who work 60 hours or more per week but not hard working at all, many just clock in and slack off .

I’m 35 currently. My wife only makes about 27,000 per year, so that’s not really enough to make ends meet.
Okay. You're a little older than I expected you to be (I'm 44 shortly). I'll assume you make considerably more than your wife does, so this is a tough spot.
Listen....I can't tell you what to do and most of the time, I'd say tough it out while on the hunt and just call in anytime you need to do an interview. If there's a potential for you to leave and pick something up part-time to give you more time to look, do that. Only you know your situation. But again, you don't want to be miserable. It will permeate other areas of your life. I really don't think you're going to go unemployed for long if you leave, but you know your worth and your market better than I do.
I did this once and it was right before my wife and I got married. Went on our honeymoon with me having no job, but a good opportunity lined up. It was a shot in the dark. I'm here to say that 22 years later, it worked out and I wouldn't change a thing. If you're religious at all, pray about it. Find peace in whatever decision you make.

Should not have a problem as long as you have enough money saved for a couple months. If you are Louisiana this could be the chance to go to another state.

I would stick it out until you find a new job
Accounting jobs are in high demand right now
You shouldn’t have any problem finding something with that experience
Get out of the firm life
Your life will be a whole lot better

I kind of like the idea the other guy said. You can put in your 2 weeks, start applying a ton, and then after that try to get some sort of counter job to pay the bills if you haven’t found anything at this point. & Shouldn’t be long for you to get a new job with your CPA. This advice won’t work for everybody but could work for you if you don’t have a bunch of crazy expenses.

hell no, find another job first. Your granddad probably worked in a coal mine for 50 years and you're whining about working 50 hours a week in the AC?
Cowboy up son. Is this what our current generation of men has become?

Yes. Sold my home though and moved, went back to school for a bit. Had enough to live on for a while, until all settled.

Yep, if you start applying to jobs in Texas as well it should be pretty easy. You can always move up from there after 6 months or so if you hate your new company

Take a sick day to interview
Posted on 1/17/24 at 5:13 pm to cbree88
Go and ask for a 20k/yr raise. Of course only if you have something else definitely lined up. You might be surprised. If it doesn't fly then tell your boss to fist himself.

Working 50 hours per week during busy season is making it very hard to look for other jobs and go on interviews. Some potential employers are flexible about interview times, and others aren’t.
I hear you and I know this is counterintuitive, but it really is easier to find a job when you have one. Your approach and the way you evaluate offers will be completely different and your odds of ending up in a better role increase.
It won’t be busy season for long right? If you can mentally commit to a few more months where you are the job search will get easier. And I think that’s the key; committing mentally. If your mindset is “I need to get out of dodge” your going to search, interview and accept offers accordingly.

Working 50 hours per week
That’s it? Probably from home too. Our country is doomed.
And I guess posting thousands of messages on a Internet message board qualifies as working to you.

If they lay you off do you get a severance? If so don’t quit.

In my experience it’s this. If you aren’t careful you’ll get filtered out just because you aren’t presently working.

They aren’t going to lay him off. They’re going to terminate him.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned but that you could try is checking with staffing agencies in the areas you’d like to work. They often will have recruiters who focus on specialties like accounting and could find you a short-term role that could turn into something bigger or, at worst, serve as a stop-gap.
