Wife and I have been a few times, but not within the last ten years. Previously we stayed at the Market Pavillion Hotel so I checked it out for our upcoming trip in May. Rooms were $700 'fing dollars!
We think we'll consider alternatives.
What can this group recommend?
TIA

My wife and I stayed at the Planter's Inn a few years ago...smaller hotel with classic Charleston decor...we liked it...
We also considered the Charleston Place, which is right across the street from Planter's Inn. Lots of restaurant options and shopping in there.
Both are in a good, central location.
We also considered the Market Pavillion, but settled on Planter's Inn since it could accommodate us for the entire trip.

Hotel Bennett
Dewberry
Restoration
Spectator
Those are very nice and hotels downtown are not cheap
One fairly affordable place I found was the Ryder Hotel. Definitely not as nice but serviceable and great location.

I like the Vendue. Nice hotel in a perfect location within easy walking distance to most places you will want to go. They have a couple of very good bars, including one on the rooftop.

Meeting Street Inn
Good location. Older place but nice rooms.

Here me out, we found a "yacht" on VRBO that we stayed in that was great fun for a weekend 2 Aprils ago. Much cheaper than any hotel we could find and a short Uber ride to town.

Dewberry
Charleston Place used to be a Belmond, and was great. I don’t know what it’s like now. The building was originally an Omni though, IIRC.
Hotel Bennett is mechanically probably fine, I don’t like Shiela’s little empire though. She has bad taste.
I appreciate that the hotel carries the Bennett name though.

Mills House just underwent a major renovation and is really nice now. Pool area is awesome and you’ll want that for May.
Great location too. Might be worth a look.

Mills house is great. Stayed there multiple times and a perfect location to hit everything.

Wife and I are in Charleston every few months and we usually stay directly across the bridge in Mt. Pleasant. Quick Uber to the top of King or Meeting and definitely cheaper. We also like to spend time at the bars/patios along Shem Creek, so just a bit more convenient.

Second the Mills House, stayed there in December. Great location and hotel amenities. Highly recommend.

We've had great trips with Vendue and Charleston Place (when it was Belmond).

I've had luck finding Charleston hotel deals on Travelzoo. We've most recently booked the Francis Marion that way and had a nice stay.

Thanks for all the suggestions. My wife really wanted to stay at the Market Pavillion again, so I called them and they gave me a much better deal than was listed on their website.
