If you're looking for a coach to credit with LSU's success

It's probably Skip Bertman more than Nick Saban. I was there. I still remember Skip's 2001 barnstorming tour. Fans were furious with the price of everything going up (to pay for Saban's salary + spending spree), but Bertman was lecturing us that the screws were only going to get tighter. I remember the "per seat" comparison to other programs that were flourishing at the time (LSU fans were getting a bargain!). I remember getting uncomfortable in my seat, squirming thinking "there's no way LSU fans will pay that much."
The point is, it was LSU's commitment to paying top dollar that enabled Saban to succeed here. It can't be done without an institution making that commitment. Not here, not in Alabama, not anywhere. The people crediting Saban for LSU's success as though he alone did this are fools. LSU made Saban. Not the other way around.

Let's just call it mutually beneficial and move on.

Yes, LSU paid Saban the 3rd highest CFB HC salary to come to LSU after a 3-8 season because LSU was in such high demand.
The shite people convince themselves of to help them sleep at night is mind boggling.

Saban made the LSU administration realize its unique position in this state with its football talent and being the only D1 school. It was an epiphany for all of the LSU TAF administration. That lesson has never been forgotten.

The sentiment of this isn't lost but LSU isn't the only "D1" school in Louisiana.

It was the only D1 school with a football program that mattered. let me correct my statement. It was the only national brand program.

This is getting ridiculous.
Some people will convince themselves of anything to make LSU look better. I use to do that kind of shite when I was in college...then I grew up.

Skip had a lot to do with it but Saban was the one that demanded that we upgrade our facilities. Without his push for the football ops, upgrades to the old field armory building etc we wouldn’t have been able to stay on top of recruiting like we did when Les took over

At some point they were taking the football players by bus from the locker room to the practice fields and a lot of times the were walking

That's fair. Like I said, the sentiment of what you said is correct - it took some figuring out that LSU was a sleeping giant and it had (and still has) a lot of advantages over other schools, including most of the ones in the SEC.

quote:It was Dinardo who first had success recruiting New Orleans, and no "epiphany" was required - it was a giant flashing sign. No one needed Saban to realize that. The epiphany was that it wasn't going to work without spending top dollar on the best facilities and creating the best program.

Saban set the tone. Les Miles underachieved, even with 1.5 national championships. CEO hit the lottery. CBK will maintain and improve.

whoever made it so that the LSU head coach could make more than the governor should get as much credit as anyone for the success at LSU

Arnsparger brought this to light almost two decades before Saban.

Oh how I wish LSU fans could move on from Saban. The best part of his retirement will be opening Tiger Droppings and not seeing 2-3 sidebar articles about him

I'd credit Bob Broadhead. First guy to start dragging us out of a purely insular mentality, and the guy responsible for Arnsparger AND Skip getting here.

Saban saw the opportunity that LSU presented with its place in the SEC and, most importantly, easier access to great talent than what Michigan St. offered. However, he had a clear vision of what he thought it would take to make LSU a championship program and he was DEMANDING in getting the resources necessary to make that vision a reality. The AD and BOS weren't fully on board with that vision. However, Mark Emmert helped sway them. Since that time the mindset at LSU completely changed. But make no mistake. Bertman wasn't exactly someone who wanted to spend lavishly as an AD. He may have been the guy who had the cache to softly sell the fans on the significant cost increases that were set to come with the changing landscape of college football. But he wasn't the driving force.
Saban completely changed the football culture here. To his immense credit, Miles kept it going for a long time despite facing some really high expectations. Without the Saban hire LSU is probably, at best, Auburn. A program capable of a great season or two here an there, but always seemingly riding that roller coaster of good success and bad seasons. Until Orgeron thought himself to be one of the great minds in college football coaching, LSU went two decades without ever experiencing losing.

Any number of coaches at the time could have seen what Saban did and had the success he did. I give him credit for seeing it and taking advantage of it, but I do think LSU had a significant role in making Saban Saban
