Was Saban's retirement an open secret in coaching circles?

I ask because Saban's last staff hires were a huge step down from previous staff hires.

Nahhh. In this day and age, any smoke at all would have been all over social media in a heartbeat. While rumored the last few years in general, this came out of nowhere.

He had recently bought a $17M mansion in Jupiter Island. That should have made it obvious, but I guess most people were in denial.

Well, also his age. Most people figured within 5 years, but I bet he kept it close enough that no one knew the date but his wife.
