Its amazing how much people beat down Smith pretty much because he was a 5-star simply when the fact he is was pretty good down the stretch this season. He got multiple pressures each game in the pass rush against Wisconsin, A&M and Florida. And by the way, there's a reason he played over the guys who are also returning - he is better than them. Lets consider for a minute this was his first year back from a serious injury and he had no position coach all season.

He makes the room better going into next season, that's all there is to it. Right now we have Guillory and who the F knows starting for next season. The situation is pretty dire with Smith leaving at DT and anyone with a brain can see that. Theres practically nobody left in the portal worth taking a look at so we're putting all our chips in the "hopefully 1-2 DTs hit the portal in the spring who dont suck"...otherwise we're going to be playing an awful lot of guys who shouldnt be playing DT next season.

Why would I make this up? It was kind of wild, she was sitting right next to me and all I could do was cheers to it. I sat by Naber's and Womack's family as well. They are all sweethearts.

He was a waste of space last year. All he did was get tied up with one lineman and end the play in the place he started it. Never required and double teams. We’re better off moving on. Can’t understand the panic.

Give the guy a bit of a break.

It’s hard coming off of an ACL surgery. DT is an explosive position and it’s hard to get the physical attributes back but it’s also hard to get the mental attributes back.

He played for a clueless DC.

He missed an entire year of development.

He had no positions coach.

He was raw as a freshman, depending on athleticism. When the athleticism is taken away via ACL tear/surgery, you have to have technique to fall back on. He didn’t have the coaching while recovering and he didn’t have the coaching this year.

With another year I think he could be good. 2nd round good. Maybe 1st round.

As of now, we will have 4 true DTs for spring practice.
Jalen Lee
Jacobian Guillory
Shone Washington (juco transfer)
De'Myrion Johnson (early enrollee)

We will have 9 DEs for spring
Savion Jones
Parish Shand
Deshawn Womack
Bradyn Swinson
Jaxon Howard
Dylan Carpenter
Gabriel Reliford (early enrollee)
Ahmad Breaux (early enrollee)
Kojab Collins (early enrollee)

With as many DEs we have it will be a good time to experiment with moving Jones and Shand inside as both are 6'5 and over and both weigh 280+. That would give us up to 7 DTs for fall camp with McKinley coming in. We probably will pick up 1 more in the portal between now and fall camp.

We need more than one DT. We need about three of them in the portal.

We’ve got two or three high school kids coming in. LSU had 17 guys enter the transfer portal & we’ve only taken in five, there are still spots available.

Going to pick it from the DL tree?

What a dumb statement in the transfer portal era. Plenty of guys in the portal & we can still try to recruit some of our own guys back.

Oh no, only 8 months till our first game.
There’s a spring window for the portal too & graduate transfers can enter at any time

I asked something similar in another thread. If that doesn't work, how do we think that Baker adjusts? 3-4? 3-3-5? Either could work with LB's and large number of DB's that are more natural safeties.

Such a disappointment

I’d love to hear the logic somebody spun to him encouraging him to go pro

What type of players do you think make it that deep in the portal? We saw how relying on the portal worked out for CB this year.

It’s an issue. We are going to be thin and weak at DT

Maason Smith was double teamed A LOT! These discussions are handicapped by the fact that the majority of posters watch nothing but the ball, and they get their opinions from their fellow fans without discriminating amongst those who know and those who, like them, just watch the ball.

The facts are that while Maason Smith never lived up to his high five star ratings, he did a good job at LSU. Had he been a three star I think the perception of him on here would be very good. He was obviously laboring during the first few games this season, but he finished strong.

Unlike most others, i am not sure Maason had a full opportunity to live up to his 5 star rating.
He did in his freshman year, when he was all-SEC Freshman.
He was injured for the his entire soph, season.
And last season, he clearly was not fully recovered, was not fully in shape and had no DL coach. He played better the last few games and ended the Whisky game with really good play.
While i agree his leaving was a big mistake, if you want to find a real 5 star flop, refresh yourself on somebody like Chris Davenport.

Said more in shock than doubting you. Text does not always translate accurately.

Cheers.
