Yep. Took me a while to realize that my spell selections weren’t synergizing at all. Once I started keeping an eye on what lasts one turn, versus ten turns, versus until rest, and then concentration versus not, my party become vastly more powerful.

Also, don’t sleep on Misty Step and Dimension Door outside of combat. They can trivialize otherwise very difficult environment traversal, including puzzles.

I haven't come across anything making me need to use them outside of combat (at least thus far, just now going into Steel Foundry), but using them in the trial of Bhaal was mandatory due to the layout of the enemies.

Need is a strong word. But as an example, you can completely skip one of the trials of Shar. But more commonly, it’s been useful for me in getting around.

Grym popped out and was stomping my arse, then I got him into the actual forge and smashed him. Had to revive party members multiple times. Thought I was going to have to reload a save until my eureka moment. And then it worked!

Also to previous poster, I'm still doing shite arse backwards I'm sure. There's so much to learn, they should offer a BG class at community colleges.

Great advice. I always kept at least two party members with that ability. Usually through items they wore.

Check out this guy's youtube videos on how to min/max classes. Even if you don't want to follow the guide, it was highly educational to see how synergistic the game can be.

Knock lets you skip the most annoying portion of the game.

Knock lets you skip the whole thing

And you can lock the hag out of her lair making the fight soooooooooo much easier

Sometimes just splitting the party bypasses a fight - I had Karlach and Astarion split out of the party and just far enough away when Tav and Shadowheart walked into the Viconia room and she only locked those two in conversation. I pivoted to K/A and they were able to get to the boss and kill her in one turn. Usually that whole room aggros but instead, all the followers just went 'oh shite viconia sucks, must be the will of Shar' and left me alone.

My first play through I was admittedly not optimizing my party or play style. Repeatedly losing this battle for 10 hours forced me to learn how to play much better lol.

The Halsin portal fight got me good for a while. I finally had to put some crowd control spells on my bars and learn how they worked

Crowd control spells are definitely worth slotting in BG3. Hypnotize or an upcast Hold X can immediately take an unwinnable fight into easy mode.

I tried that not realizing the quest was going to pop that kind of battle, did well the first two rounds but by round 3 the portal had taken serious damage. So, I nope'd my way back to a previous save and decided to hold off until I look into it a bit more and optimize my party.

The bowmen do a stupid amount of damage to the portal. You have to prioritize them or they will wreck the portal in very short order.

I used sleet to control them for a few rounds. I put spirit guardians at the portal so anyone getting through got finished off

Gale and I hung out by the portal, him concentrating on cloud of daggers and raining down fiery AOE while I hypnotized everyone with my lore bard while peppering with Potent Robe cantrips on steroids. Shadowheart ran around with spirit guardians and Karlach... did Karlach things

Darkness/fog cast over the portal + an ice AOE up front = sexy money rock n roll

I wrecked them the second try; I jsut vastly underestimated how much fricking pierce damage they would do to a fricking portal the first time around

Took it from half health to dead in one round. Didn’t make that mistake again

The Halsin portal fight

I used that tactic. I put up wall on the dock to block ranged shots. I then put another wall up a few feet out from the dock. Beyond that I casted a Wall of Stone once the fight started. I had put oil and grease out there so once the spawns started showing I threw a fireball to light the area up and peppered the area with AE magics and arrows.

Just got to Act III. FFS, they've loaded this area. I'm exploring Rivington and already have a ton of new quests and I'm meeting new people and don't know what's going on. It's a bit overwhelming.

ETA: The scene where you free the Nightsong was pretty badass, though.

Does smashing any companions prevent you from smashing other companions?
