What is a good pellet rifle to buy to shoot coons and squirrels with around the house and camp?

RWS Model 34
The German Made Break Barrel Air Rifle made to hand down from Generation to Generation.

Can hit soup can consistently at 50 yards. Very accurate.

The PCP rifles are where it’s at. That RWS is almost as loud a 22 rimfire. My brother has one. Kinda defeats the purpose.
Guess it depends on what you’re willing to spend. The PCP rifles are expensive, but mine is the most accurate gun I have to about 50-60 yards.

Marlin or similar bolt action with tube fed magazine.
CCI Subsonic shorts
Quieter than my break barrel pellet rifle and much more accurate/consistent.

You can shoot animals with any pellet gun.

If you want a good one that actually can kill a squirrel and even coons and armadillos (and small hogs in the ear hole) you will want a PCP. That stands for precharged pneumatic. You’ll also want to skip past the 22 caliber variants and instead opt for a 25 caliber. Expect the air compressor to cost as much or more than the gun itself.

Benjamin Marauder is popular, but I ended up with an Air Venturi Avenger in 25 cal. I shoot the heaviest pellets I can find at about 34 grains and it propels them to about 850fps (yes, I checked using a chronograph). You get about 50 ft-lbs of energy which is slightly less than a regular 40gr subsonic 22LR round.

22 caliber air rifles especially the kind you pump like the old Benjamins or break action like the old RWS 34 are junk compared to a PCP when it comes to ethically killing squirrels and coon sized animals with a single shot.

The Hatsan 135 QE Vortex Air Rifle, .30 Caliber break barrel is highly accurate with phenomenal power for medium size game hunting with 30 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. It still has approx. 23 ft/lbs at 50 yards making it very effective at this long range probably more effective than smaller bore guns. It is heavy and hard to cock (the price to pay for such high power in a break barrel). It is definitely not for smaller, weaker shooters.
